Turbo seems to come on late - 100-150ft out - result of too much gear?

Ok guys explain the timing again please - keep in mind this is my first experience of any kind with a turbo car. I have an auto - DO NOT use the timing retard function?

I went back out and used the 2step but only tried it up to 2400rpm - worked fine but still low 1.7's - car did run a new best of 11.30 but it's bouncing off of the limiter sometime after the 1/8th.

Pulled the cover today - 3.73's, I knew that - and the 3.27's will be done in the morning - track tomorrow night if it doesn't rain.

Here's the new runs from Tuesday, copy/paste from the other night:

Track update - 2Step installed, one of the best additions yet.

Ok first let me say that - the car runs out of gear extremely early, I just can't say where exactly - but after the 1/8th mile. It goes trhu the traps bouncing off the spark limiter. one of the runs was 11.40@110

I hadn't planned running it full 1/4 mile tonight but I did. Harder it hooks, less track I have. Was having a concern with boost coming in kinda late and I think it's the rear gears (3.73) with 26" slicks. Installed a Mallory 685 box and used the 2Step - MUCH better - launching with about 3-4lbs of boost.

At any rate - not as fast as i'm sure it should be going but I completed 1 goal - to beat my old SC 94 Z28's et of 11.37@120 with a 1.61 60' in 1587 DA weather

Last Friday - the car went 11.37@120 but missed the Z by .0028 of a second.

    Tonight:

First run - 10 minutes inside - very hot

    1.82
    7.6002
    94.69
    11.6560
    120.31

    1.7581
    7.3910
    95.72
    11.4120
    120.67

    1.7459
    7.3111
    96.18
    11.4082
    110.27

    1.7407
    7.2909
    96.34
    11.3060
    120.59

    1.8039
    7.3860
    95.87
    11.4148
    120.35

All runs except the first one the car was banging the spark limiter. The 2step is a thing of pure beauty - 16lbs in the slicks and they stand no chance launching at 4lbs of boost.

    Gears are a must.

    Had a blast tonight

Corrected the 11.30 run (8pm tonight) DA was 2875!!!!!

    Based on:
    Temp: 79°
    Humidity: 72%
    Track Altitude: 1000 feet
    Pressure: 29.88 in.
    Density Altitude = 2875 feet

If I was you I would have those 3.27's installed with the 26inch tire your using and then put it on the 2 step and see what it does. You shouldn't be running out of gear and banging off the rev limiter anymore and the turbo will like the load from the gear swap.

You can run a lil more timing while you are spooling to help it spool faster. You can also lean it out a lil there as well. What are you using to control these functions? Try a lil less air in those slicks as well

3.27's are in now - i'm hitting the track again tonight if it doesn't rain. I'm using a Mallory Hyfire VI 685 box for 2step and rev limiter.

I've got a lot of folks telling me to dump the boxed upper intake and go back to a stock upper - any thoughts? I currently have to run 2 1" phenolic spacers for the TV cable to clear the valvecovers - should I move back to a stock upper intake to go with the stock lower?

Your stock lower intake is a huge restriction as you know. I can only imagine that would help your power everywhere and might even help spool.

I'm very surprised that since you are now launching off the two step, that your 60fts are that much better. What RPM do you have to 2 step activating?

I think a nice TFS-R with box upper would give you tremendous gains.

Didn't get to hit the track tonight - but might go to an 1/8th mile tomorrow afternoon.

I'm leaving on the 2step at 2400rpm - I haven't tried any higher to see if the brakes will hold the car.

    What rpm in traps?
    What speed?
    What tire?

Was topping out just pas the 1/8th mile mark - crossing the stripe bouncing on the limiter at 6100rpm, wouldn't trap higher than 120.xx with a 3.73 gear and 26'' tire.

I also found that the vacuum line from turbo head unit to wastegate was sucking in air which explains why it seemed like my BOV was constantly open. Boost now comes on much smoother and doesn't have that constant sound of air being blown off.

So, gear has been changed and vacuum line fixed.

Track again tomorrow night, times/videos to come later.

2400 is way too low to launch. Do you have a transbrake?

No, I have to footbrake the car and i'm not sure how high I can get the rpms before the brakes push thru. I'm going to experiment more tomorrow night and bump it up in 200rpm increments.

are you going to swap the upper intake?

On your advise I certainly am - I won't have it swapped before tomorrow night tho. I am going to dyno as is and then swap the upper and re-dyno, i'm very interested in seeing the results now.
