I think this is going to be the "paint" job my car receives. The only issue I see (with my car) is my current paint is the original single stage and it's weathered pretty bad, it feels like 100 grit sand paper. I'm not sure if the surface needs to be smooth or not, gonna test a panel on the car and see how it holds up.

THIS. I've got minor door damage on the passenger side of my hillclimb/TT car, and at some point this coming year I'm going to do a quickie bondo repair and plastidip the entire car. No way I can justify dishing out $3k for a wrap or paint job when the car is seeing 20 minute sessions with tons of gravel, unpaved paddocks, and smacking into a cliff face or tire wall looming at every turn. Just the amount of stuff I smack into it in the garage would have me petrified. With plastidip, I can coat the car, it will still take the vinyl numbers/class letters we're required to run, and if I scratch it up, I can fix it with a rattle can.

The stuff got here today, took quite a while if you ask me. Anyway, I pulled one my Billet Specialties rims off, cleaned it up with the "special" cleaning stuff they sell(smells just like Windex BTW), and tried spraying it.

I sent them an e-mail when I purchased the stuff asking what the minimum application temp was, because it is cold here. They said there was no minimum temp, as long as it was not below freezing. When I sprayed the stuff(rattle cans) it came out all chunky, kinda like ass spatter on the back of a public toilet. I tried a different car, same results. It got up to about 45 today. Guess I will have to wait for warmer weather.

Yea same thing happened to me.. I got 2 can's to try on my car to see how it is.. Like you, it was cold when I sprayed it.. like 45ish and it came out kinda chunky.. Though it did smooth itself out and lay flat somewhat..

It came out OK.. but in real life, you can see the line's.. I'm gonna redo it in the spring and see how it turn's out.

LOL :laughhard: did you leave the cans inside until you were ready to spray, if it came out of the can chunky it was either to cold in the can or just plain shit like i thought it was when i posted this. :biggrin-new:

Can of paint was too cold. I was excited to try it out and only had an hour or so to mess with it the day the cans came. After letting the cans warm up, I tried again. I think it turned out real well.

Two issues. One, the deep dish of the rim made it a bit tricky getting the paint in where it needed to be without being too close. But, the stuff levels out well, and I had no runs.

Two, on the center cap the plastic dip seems to have pulled away from the recessed lip. Like it shrank when it dried. Possibly due to the temperature of the wheel. When I do the rest I will take the caps off and do them separately.

The stuff just peals right off the tire, no need to mask it off. When the weather gets warm enough to melt the two foot pile of snow from in front of my garage door I will do the rest of the rims, put the car outside, and get some pictures.

For under $400, I'm highly impressed.

Oh, well I only have done my hood and as you can see, it was done shitty. Once it warm's up, the whole car will be done and I'll get pic's.

Used to be the last thing people wanted was orange peel in a paint job, now that look is considered sharp?

Take a look at any car made, they will all be orange peeled from the factory. Wet sanding five times isn't something you get from the OEMs.

Of the past 5 vehicles I've purchased, only 1 had orange peal from the factory (F250), along the lowest 4 inches of body where the paint is sprayed thicker (I assume because that area is more prone to being hit by road debris). Even with OEM paint jobs, the orange peel is so minimal that the average person doesn't notice it (automotive enthusiasts do) whereas anyone will see the look when Plasti-Dip is used. At least that orange peal has something Plasti-Dip doesn't have: some gloss and being able to wax it.

How is Plasti-Dip all that much different than unpainted ricer body kits...? Done for pretty much the same reason.

What you see on the bottom of your truck is a tar like coating they spray on before the paint for rust and rock chip damage, look at an F150 and it's not there it's for the deluxe package like XLT King Ranch and so on.
