Intriguing question...compound super/turbocharging

    The current 1.4L Volkswagen TSI engine uses a supercharger at low speed and then shuts off the supercharger and lets the larger Turbo take over:

    The supercharger drive is declutched and the supercharger is bypassed with an external LARGE by-pass valve.

    The turbo spools faster because the supercharger provides more mass flow per rpm vs a NA engine.
