looks badass! congrats on the build up :)

Is that an aluminum block 5.4 straight from a ford GT or did you go the Iron block, built bottom end route with the stock Ford GT heads and intake?

Are you planning on building the headers yourself? what kind of turbos? and will this all fit under the stock hood?

oh and what K member are you planning on going with?

I didnt see if anyone else asked them and Im curious :) I'd love to go this route sometime soon.. so Im curious.

    thanks.

iron shelby 5.4 block. very minor differences from a standard 5.4 iron block. i am going to tear down and inspect the gt500 motor although it seems to be in perfect condition. likely upgrade rods to manley h-beam with arp hardware that came standard in the GT motor. otherwise, i understand the internals are the same. likely stage I on the heads and swap in the GT cams. at this point, i am planning on a sheet metal intake, but we'll see on that one. i plan to fab the turbo headers myself. likely twin GT35Rs. 2.5 or 3" cowl. havent picked up a k-member yet. i like the pa racing. may not even get motor mounts and just do motor plates.

    thanks,

wow very cool build man. Im fixin to start doing a very similar setup with my 87 notch. Havent decided yet between getting some custom wheels built and narrowing the rear end or just widening the stock wheels and leaving the rear end stock. Either way its going to have to be mini tubed. Is thier any way you could email me some pics of this setup?

Looks sick man Cant wait to see the build up on the GT motor. Where did you find the motor? I am looking for one right now but havent found what i am looking for yet.
I am doing the same motor with a twin setup this winter. I did a very similar mini tub a few years back too.

TwinturbostangMark, i got the motor from a fella that posted it at modularfords. he also posts here sometimes. came across it looking for some GT heads. havent seen many GT500 or FORD GT motors for sale. Gonna have to be patient, but they should pop up from time to time when as there are surely some totalled ones out there already unless you are willing to spend big cash to buy a crate version.

    Thanks,

    Michael

TTiroc , I actually cut the sides of the tubs and frame rails from 1/8" steel which was about what the stock rails measured. Picked it up from a metal fabrication place that is also a warehouse here in atlanta. Bought a complete 4'x8' sheet for about 100 bucks which was more than enought for the job. The metal that formed the width of the tub is .080" that was laying around at work. I had to heat it up to get the bend just right tacking as I went along.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks,

    Michael

Finished tying the frame together and adding the final touches to the roll cage. Already had subframe connectors under the car, but needed to fabricated something to link the cage to the frame. The roll bar connecting the frame extends several inches into the frame rails.

Modified the retaining brackets for the lower rear seat. Had to shorten em slightly given the wider wheel wells. Notched some of the cushion in the corners, and the lower cushion fit pretty well. I also got working on the backs of the rear seat. Modified these brackets as well and made the back supports out of 3/4" wood. Bolted it together with some plates for good support. I think it came out alright. Next, I want to round the edges of the back boards to match the shape of the original rear backs. Then I will remove about 4" from the center of the original back cushion and then glue it onto the new back boards. That should be good enough to have it upholestered along with the original front seats and rear cushion. First time trying this, but I jumped into the back seat and its very sturdy. I was well surprised. Anyway, feedback welcome before I close this little chapter and move on...

Also, keep in mind I am putting in the rear seat just to fit my 5 and 3 year old. Prolly to snug for an adult, but kids had plenty of room.

    Thanks,

    Michael

Looks like your having lots of fun. The only thing I see as a potential problem Is the 2 bars running back to the wheel tubs. Will that be legal??? I believe it has to tie directly to the frame/structure of the car...

May not be legal for an nmra type event. Don't know actually. Not really building it to compete in any class. I think I should be fine running some grudge night test 'n tune or some small local races hopefully. I probably could have done it different if I had to do the cage over again. Ohh well. I did take the time to tie the loop to the frame.

Should be ok then... Funny thing is I went to my local 1/8 mile track last night and they were having an NHRA sponsered event and there were some obvious violations but they still let them run any way... Go figure... :2thumbs:
