    Re: 1980 Notch 351 Single T-72 Build UPDATE 9-23-12 **10.38@131**

I made it back out to the track for a few more passes. New best was a 10.38@131.

Since the last outing I tossed the E7 heads in the trash and added a pair of junkyard GT40P's. I also swapped the .435" lift truck cam for a .502"I/.520"E hydro flat tappet piece. Boost is about 20psi. Still running the stock cast piston truck shortblock.

I've only made 4 passes down the track this year and I believe with more tuning and a little more boost it will get into the high 9's. Unfortunately our track is closed for the season so it will have to wait until next year.

I also need to add some safety equipment...top of that list is a roll cage.

The transmission was blowing some fluid onto the exhaust so it was a little smokey down track. It also feels that the trans is slipping a bit in second gear so I will have to take care of those issue this winter as well.

I should have video uploaded soon.

So are the 96lb injectors high or low impendance injectors? I have a MS 1 v2.2 that I was debating using to start with on a similar build. I know from what i read they are not setup to use low impendance with out a resistor pack or something. Are you using it for timing controll too?

Low impedance. I am using resistors. MS1-extra is fuel and spark. I use a stock TFI dizzy.

Sir, That is some mighty fine fab work! The placement of all of the parts in my opinion (for whatever that's worth ;)) is excellent! Love seeing cars built with "average" parts. Thanks for sharing! Lorne

Got a question about dying the couplers, did it really work? And what was the whole process? Great build keep kit up!!

It really worked on the one that I did. You can see in the photo that it was black. It ended up fading though...I just left them blue. I just used boiling water with the clothing dye and let them hang out for about 15-20 minutes. They might get darker and stay if you did it longer or repeated the process.

Here are a couple of videos. Torque converter is a little tight...smoke is from the trans spitting some fluid out of the vent onto the exhaust.

A vented catch can will be installed soon.

    Re: 1980 Notch 351 S480 UPDATE 5-9-13

Some winter/spring updates happening to this car.

freshened the C4 and installed a new PTC converter
building new headers and hotside piping
p-trim T72 is being replaced with a race cover forced inductions cast wheel S480
stock axles replaced with 31 spline strange
new mickey et street radial pros 275/60 replaced an old set of 28x9 slicks
    building a 10 point 8.50 legal 4130 roll cage
replacing 2.5 bar map sensor with 4.5 bar so I can really crank the boost!

Goals for this year are to go deep into the 9's with the stock 351w shortblock and gt40p heads.

Attached are some photos of the update progress. Cage should be done this weekend and then I will be working on the new hotside plumbing.

    Runabout,

With and S480 on a 351W - I think those gt-40P heads are going to be a big restriction. You may also run into issues with them lifting up under the beating an S480 can throw out...

I agree that I will be leaving power on the table but I want to see how far I can push these stock parts. After all this is a $300 engine including the new cam and valve springs!

Most people would say that even last years combination should have been lifting heads but it didn't. 18 psi, stock head bolts, and composite head gaskets.

If it becomes an issue that I can't fix with tuning I will put some aftermarket thick heads on it. Most of the people I see having issues with E7's or iron GT40's are usually running way to much timing.

Well then let's see what abuse the S480 can dish out. Kind of like the grenade thread. Try to be careful though - putting a rod through the block and having the car skate on oil into the wall would be bad...

    Cheers,
    Dan
