Mike, my dad, and I dropped the car off at Fast Forward Motorsports in Eudora, Arkansas Tuesday night. Randy Westmoreland and Tom from Fast Forward Motorsports will be doing the conversion. They are a relatively new company, but they have been racing and building cars, etc for a long time. Actually, we used to race Randy years ago back in our street racing days. You can check them out at www.fastforwardmotorsports.net and we'll be keeping the pictures flowing as often as we can. Anyone who is venturing into the turbocharged alcohol setup and is doing this :bang:, then Randy could possible help you out. He has a sbc that had a single 91mm turbo on alcohol than ran 5.0s in the 1/8th with only around 21 or 23 lbs of boost on 10-inch tires at over 3,100lbs. He had a lot left in it. They also have a chassis dyno where they can tweak on some setups. I believe its a 1750hp chassis dyno. Anyway, they've got a huge shop, and you'll be able to see from the work on our car the type of work that they are capable of doing.

Randy has to mount the new carbon fiber front-end, mount the twin Turbonetics Y2k 88mm's, mount two Turbonetics New Gen wastegates, build new stainless headers, run down pipes, j-pipes, mount headlights, and run a new cold side from the turbos to the intercooler. Plus, I'm sure he'll be doing other things, but that's all I can think of at the moment.

We'll also be installing a new Big Stuff 3 system with a digital Racepak dash, Liberty 4-speed with a bruno, etc.

Just for information purposes, the motor is a Steve Petty/Pro-Line Racing Engines all aluminum small block ford with Brodix Neal heads, Rdi block, Sonny Bryant Crank, etc.

I'll get some preliminary pics up as soon as I can.

    Thanks,
    Brian Brown

Here is a picture last year of the car when it had a single 106 on it.

Here's pics from last night. The tube between the two turbos is there just for temporary line-up purposes. I can't wait until it's done. :chacha:

so what is the trade off between facing the turbos forward, verses having he exhaust at a straight shot at the turbine wheel :hmm:

Did you get an e-mail from Andrew? lol In all honesty, I don't know what the trade off is. I know Randy has been running a turbo for awhile, and he feels that it is better to mount them like this. I personally know, and I have talked to some other outlaw racers that will not mount their turbos forward in fear of something flying into the turbo. I know personally of people having problems with forward facing turbos, blowing up, etc from material flying into them. We never blew our single up, but it was facing like these are, so there is no inlet in the front bumper. Mike and I talked, and even if we did face them forward, we were not going cut a hole in the front end in fear of something flying into the turbos. Some of the outlaw guys could care less because they have more turbos sitting in the trailer and they are sponsored by the turbo company, so they will just have them rebuilt for free. We don't even have spares, so if we currently blow one up due to something flying in it, then we're in the trailer. Hopefully, some time this year we can get some help and put a few more spare parts in the trailer, but until then, we felt that it was best to not cut an inlet hole in the front-end for the turbos. I'm going to give Randy a link to this build-up, and maybe he'll chime in on his opinion. He's a little more educated on these things than I am.

Thanks. Fun Ford is allowing twin 88mms in Street Outlaw. We will be running the Clash of the Titans as well as FFW, ORSCA, Prescott Outlaws, local outlaw 10.5 races, and maybe some NMCA and NOPI. NOPI's pro outlaw rwd is allowing outlaw 10.5 cars next year at 3000lbs. We'll probably run some King of the Hill races in Texas and whatever fits in the schedule and makes Money sense. lol

I was contemplating moving mine to face forward. I like the idea of the straight shot exhaust. I have a hard time spooling mine, before the transmission burns up. :bang:

Looks good Brian! How exactly is the frontend supported on the bottom?

I bought a front-end mounting kit from RJ race cars to mount the front-end. I have some more pics, which includes the front-end that we're going to use, but I have to wait until I get home to pull them off of my camera. There will be a u-bar at the front of the frame rails, or whatever Randy decides, across the bottom to take the place of the bottom core support. The front-end will probably be mounted off of it. I'll put some pics up as soon as it gets done.

Anytime you can get the full flow of the exhaust going straight in the turbo is better. It keeps the velocity up high. Bends slow velocity down and that makes for slightly longer spool up. And when your trying to spool these big boys up you need all the help you can get.

You got a transmission cooler? What transmission you running, fluid, etc?

I really don't think that there is an advantage of running the turbo facing forward, but I really don't know. Have you guys ever noticed that Chuck Samuel's Pro 5.0 or outlaw, whatever it is, does not have the turbo facing forward through the front-end? He has some duct work running from the hood scoop, but the turbo is facing sideways like these are. Some say you get fresh, cooler air to the turbos when their mounted facing forward, then I have also heard that at certain speeds that it actually starts pulling air away from the turbo, so who knows? I think that everyone has a different opinion on everything, and I have learned that real quickly over the last two years with this car. I think you actually have to experiece a lot of this stuff first, before you really know what's best. The only problem with that is that it puts a dent in the pocket book. :bang:

The transmission cooler is about 10"x10"x4" with a high velocity fan. The fuild is a multipurpose tractor fluid. I am going to make a cooler that will go in my ice cell and change to a different type fluid, probaly the same mix that Andrew is running. I believe he may have go the mix from you. First I have to learn how to rebuild a power glide. Can't be that hard ;)

I tend to agree...Samuels' Pro 5.0 setup is by far different than any other, but it's been on the car for about 3 years now and he almost always seems to throw down more MPH than most of the other cars at any given race (along with some sort of NHRA Comp Eliminator class record). I'm sure that his impeller probably munches up less gravel than a typical nose-mounted turbo, and oil draining might be less of a hassle as well.

I read a comparison once that concluded the opposite. When the exhaust gases leave the turbo, they are swirling, and the flow is not straight and uniform. The comparison used a straight pipe, a 90* elbow pipe, and a box chamber with an outlet located perpendicular to the turbine (similar to a banjo fitting for exhaust, for lack of a better term). Spool-wise (based on the RPM when the power came on), the straight pipe came in last. I can't remember which setup came in first, but the point was that you might need something to break up the swirling and convert the exhast gases to a nice, straight flow.

Did you mean when the exhaust gases left the heads/headers/j-pipes? That is what he was referring to, not when the exhaust gases left the turbo. I think that was what you meant to say, instead of when the exhaust gastes leave the turbo. The dishcharge for the turbo will have two 90s that turns the turbo discharge back toward the firewall. The exhaust will be ran back towards the firewall; it will not dump in front of the tires.

Oops yeah, that's it...after-turbo was what I was going for. But the downpipe plumbing (aka flow) after the turbo is just as important as the header plumbing. If you have restrictive post-turbo exhaust, then the turbo will also be slow to spool.
