As some of you may know, I've been collecting parts for about 2 and a half years now to build a turbo lightning. It's been an on and off process and further delayed by my swapping parts and buying other toys along the way. :bang:

Now that I finally have most of my core items together or on the way, here's a build thread to share.

The truck is apart and coughed up most everything for the motor to be pulled already as you can see.

I'll be pulling it out tuesday evening, I only have to undo the driver's side motor mount and pull off the hood and it'll be free.

I slid the bed back to start working on the fuel system, I need to have the pickup modified and welded up.

Now for the pictures I know everyone really wants to see

    longblock

Intake manifold (I still need to make fuel rails, a bonnet, and the intercooler, I think i can get 2 out of 3 done in the next 2 weeks)

And I also started building my headers

That's it for now, I hope to have a bunch more in the coming weeks. :2thumbs:

Cool project, just ordered my 5.4L longblock this morning, mines going in an '85 Notch.

Where are the flanges from? 1/2 inch right? You form the tubes or buy them?

That's a GT Lower? Dual injectors would be nice, but I think I'm going with a Sullivan. You going to do any intake mods so there is a little more runner?

    What cams?

1/2 flanges I had custom made, I formed the tubes myself, I have a friend with a muffler shop so he lets me come in on saturdays and work with their tools. I had to use either the GT lower or a cobra R lower because of the raised intake port on the GT heads, but it should have plenty of runner once the air goes 6" down the intercooler and then 6" back up to the ports. :chacha:

Way cool, especially with that GT intake. How many white babies did you have to trade for it? lol

:2thumbs: Are you planning on using the air/water setup from the GT?

That's not runner. That's plenum. A runner is a dedicated pathway to a cylinder.

That bonnet is going to be tricky. The GT intake has the intercooler core sitting lower in the valley because of all the valley space the Aluminum 5.4 offers. The iron 5.4 does not have the same clearance (which you know), so it may be a problem to to use the GT intercooler core and have a bonnet that clears the pertruding portions of the valley in the iron 5.4 block.

The design on the GT500/Lightning lower is identical to the GT save for the dual injecors and the intercooler core sitting higher allowing for the bonnet to clear the block in the valley.

Be sure to share pics and progress, and GOODLUCK!

The intake offers about 2" of runner lenght....the head with the raised intake ports offers at most 3"....thats my guess sitting here on the couch...i could go measure it!

Where is the truck that all of these GT intakes fell off of? Is it that common of a part?
