    2000 dakota rt stock 5.9

I have a custom turbo kit running 9psi have timing set at 18 at full boost I don't hear any pinging and everything seems fine but this is the first time I've messed around with these motors

18 seems safe to me with these low comp / slow burn old style heads.

Anyone with lot of boost experience can confirm???

These motors don't seem to like timing un the upper rpms anyways would it even make a difference at say 14 or 15?

    Thx

I am not an expert but learning as I go. Is this pump gas or E85? Is it intercooled?

Naturally aspirated I believe the Magnum would be something like 32-34 total timing. So with that being said, I would take out a degree of timing per pound of boost. So at 9 psi I'd bump it to 20. With just 92 octane you have to be careful. I would also invest in an AFR gauge.

Wow not much timing up top. How did you get the stock timing map?

That map seems a bit weird. The RPM numbers seem pretty random, and are you really idling at 5 degrees? You also should be able to spin that motor above 4800RPM. Thats not even the stock redline RPM.

    Hptuners

I've verified this map is the same on different 5.9 verticals. I've looked at dakota rts and ram 1500 with 5.9

    Same timing map

The redline is 5000 and the computer uses the same values from 4800-5000

Also with the stock map sensor idle is around the 2nd row from the top so its 20.

When the engine was na I tested advancing the timing on the top end and it went slower. It liked having more timing in the midrange tho it went 5mph faster with more timing in the mid

Not surprising, I've never done a Magnum but I know the close cousin LA small blocks (and the bigblocks too) seem happiest with a max advance of 36-38 degrees timing which is pretty close to where that map looks like it sits.

Ohh duh, I'm reading the map upside down... Im used to Megasquirt maps which read the other way from HPtuners :p Didn't even look at the KPA down the side. Thats interesting then. I would have suspected it'd like 10ish more degrees just fine, not get slower. I know the Magnum runs different heads than the LA but I wouldn't have thought it was that much different.

Yeah they don't like high rpm timing at all.

    I ran 15.5@86 stock
And 15.0@90 with advanced timing in the mid range

When I advanced it at upper rpms the trap speed dropped to 88 lolol

It sounds like 18 is safe for this motor and 9psi especially if you just do the math and say 27-9 = 18

I've used those boost timing masters a couple times and until someone is this thread mentioned the ~1 per psi rule I totally forgot about it

Still if others have been messing with these and superchargers or turbos lemme know what you run for total timing at full boost

I have one other tune from a supercharged 5.9 but it isn't stock it has heads and cam. He was running 14 at ~10psi. But with fast burn newer heads

The hptuners dodge forums are pretty dead and there isn't a lot of help with jtec even from hptuners

How do you like that GT45? What RPM does it hit 9 psi?

I like it. It seems a little laggy but not bad. It hits 9psi probably 3500rpm. Its hard to tell I haven't watched that closely and always shifts down to around 3k rpm I guess

Rolling into it in 1st it doesn't built full boost but right when it hits 2nd it takes off like crazy.

It has a 1600ish stall in it too

    Edit:

I did a little pull a minute ago and after shifting down it hit 9psi between 3500-4000

It fucking rips pretty hard at 9psi with this turbo was around 11.9afr and 17 deg timing

Spun in 2nd on dry pavement and i have pretty beefy tires

This was when I got the tires a little bit before I built the kit

Sweet. I am building a 318 with that turbo. It will be carb blow through on E85. I am a little concerned about it being laggy but I am going to give it a try.
