Building a 88 Mustang with a 5.3/4L80 combo. Brand new starter, B&M SFI flex plate, also new. Makes a slight grinding noise during cranking. How do I check to see if the starter needs to be shimmed?? Is this a common issue??

Check the tooth contact pattern, you should have about .020" between the tip of the starter tooth and the valley between the flexplate teeth, if there's less, shim the whole starter down, if there's more, shim the outside bolt slightly to tip it in.
