Not locking distributor?

Just another couple questions. My new setup doesn't have the distributor locked out. 351W HO SVO with a Paxton 6-7psi, Blow thru. The previous owner set the base at 9* and has the mechanical set up to 21* all in by 3500 with a MSD 6al , no boost retard. Also has meth injection that comes on at 3psi 50% and 100% at 6psi. The motor has cast pistons. Would I be better off locking it out , setting base at around 30* and pulling down to 21* OR keeping it and setting the curve higher then pulling down with boost ( with a new 6al2) ? Without adding more stress on the already crappy pistons what would be better? What would give me better throttle response?

    Thanks Marc

What about a safeguard? It is protective and adjusts to different octane ratings. I have one on my truck they are great

How long have they been out? I owned a 6al2, so I'm use to using it. Still have all my old maps.

Why not put the timing in it that "FORD" says it makes the most power at? No more boost than your running I wouldn't worry about the meth or the pistons. Put your purse down and put some timing in that thing or get out of the way I'll put it in there for you. Wake that blue oval up letter eat.:bounce:

I'd start at 32° ~ 34° and work it from there, best way is at the track, make a pass, record mph, (not ET), as long as MPH is still going up, it wants more, (leave the boost curve at a "safe" rate, 1°, 1.5°, or 2° per psi), when MPH levels off or starts to drop, pull a degree or two and lock it down. Then you could start playing with your boost curve....

    I don't think this is the same motor. I have a M-6007-A351. This is a newer M-6007-A351R. I believe it's a roller motor because of the R.
I found this article. http://www.mustangandfords.com/how-to/engine/28939-351-ho-svo-crate-engine/photo-gallery/#12 It says 10:1 compression also. I just did a compression test and came up with 130psi on all holes. 130 / 14.7 = 8.84 . That sounds closer to the 9:1 the A351R has. Where can I find block numbers on the HO block?

Block part number should be above the starter.

Does the dist have vacuum adv? If so, and your looking to do this on a budget hook it up, set it for about 40* with it hooked up, and your 21 without, and call it a day. The 6530 is nice, and well worth the money, but there are other ways to get it done.
