As the title says im new to turbo charging gas engines however im a diesel mechanic. I got this turbo off of a 12.7L detroit diesel and I have a 400 sbc and was wondering if it would even spool it. My thoughts are a 12.7 makes peak boost at around 2600 rpm and a 6.6 liter sbc is exactly half the size. So if my thinking is correct the 400 should be moving the same air as the detroit at 5500 rpm. Let me know what your thoughts are.

If that's the correct wheel sizes, it's almost exactly the same size as a gt47. It'll work fine.

Your correct in your thinking, peak boost is probably what, 18-25psi on the detroit. You won't be near that, plus gas engines have hotter egts, which drive turbines harder, so you'll spool it just fine.

Peak boost is like 33 psi but I just want 9 psi because I dont want to blow it up. Good to know it'll spool just fine!

I think your problem will actually be the compressor side. I don't know where you live and the conditions there, so I just assumed some to get some rough numbers, but a 400sbc revving to 6,000@9psi will be moving around 70lbs/min at 1.6 pressure ratio. That's not even on the map of a 75mm x 102mm wheel. You'll need a bigger compressor, or keep rpms down, you'll know when the turbo isn't happy.

It wont see over 5500 rpm because of the 5.56 rods The cam im running is .525 lift with 305 degrees of duration on a 110 lobe separation angle. Everything else is stock except i set the ring gap for boost. Using a victor jr intake.

5,500 drops you down to around 51lbs/min, good to go.
