my turbo smokes a litte, but no shaft play.

    Restricted inlet into the turbo, poor turbo drain, excessive crankcase pressure, too much oil (ball bearing turbo), sealing rings in turbo stuck, broken, lost tension because of excessive heat, wore out, or in the case of some Ebay turbos, just poor quality. More info would definitely help.
