Lombardini LDW1003 TwinTurbo

    Would like to get some opinions on the turbo selection on this as well as configuration!

    My current turbo possibilities
    #1. 2 IHI RHB3
    #2. 2 Garrett GT-12
    #3 Combination of the two Turbos
    #4. Garrett GT-12 and GT-15

    The Lombardini is a 3cylinder 1L engine

    My thoughts were to TwinTurbo it in a sequential staged setup to reduce lag without compromising ultimate boost!

    The engine is rated for 26HP I would like to get the HP to around 40HP if possible.

    I cant help with the compound turbo selection, but would like to know whats is going into, and its useable rpm range.

    Hey Mnlx,

    Here is a quick rundown

    The RPM redlines at 3600RPM and max HP is at 26

    The engine before I bought it was owned by the president of ecycle.com and he had loaned it to the University of Pennsylvania for a project car they were building. The project car for whatever reasons were never completed and was given back to him. He then used it as a testing platform for his electronic assist technologies which can be viewed on his website. He had the Engine installed into a Dodge Neon for testing and development. He decided for whatever reasons to shift focus and sell the engine and other components to me. I am working with him currently on the electric component side and control.

    I bought the engine from him while still coupled to the Dodge Neon Transmission for $1,300.

    The plan is to design a a light weight 3 wheeled SUV to replace my aging Mitsubishi Montero :)

    My plan is to utilize the majority of the Dodge Neon front clip all suspension and driveline which I have purchased at a local Junkyard for minimal cost around $600.00 at this point. I like this idea the best since #1. the engine is all ready mounted to the Neon Transmission and #2. I don't have to fabricate any parts they are all ready done and tested for a car that has a vehicle weight of 2,400lbs.

    I plan to reduce weight to max 1,500lbs I will accomplish this by:

    Reducing the back end to one wheel which will be supplied with a rear swing arm and suspension of a Honda Goldwing GL1800 = http://www.nappepin.com/LithiumHawk/swingarm.jpg http://www.nappepin.com/LithiumHawk/shockpump.jpg These parts are inexpensive $100.00 a piece and very light weight and strong perfect for my project design parameters. I also like the fact the Goldwing swingarm can easily except Dodge Neon car tires!

    The idea inspiration came from the Vortex 3 wheeler which has a very similar size and shape to the VW XL1 pictured above the Vortex can be seen here = http://www.vortexplans.com/

    So hopefully when I am done I have a very unique 3 wheeled turbocharged or Supercharged Diesel Hybrid SUV that seats 7 and weighs 1,500lbs! Which is far better than my 4,200lb Montero Monster LOL!

    After some discussions today with Thomas Knight I may scrap my Turbocharged idea and adopt his Electric Supercharger platform. I think it presents some very unique performance characteristics and capabilities that can not be matched with turbos. Not to mention implementation is much easier and minimal Diesel engine modification is needed.     Add a nice custom Water/Methanol injection system along with the Supercharger and it will be interesting to see what that little 1L 3cylinder Lombardini LDW1003 can do :)

    I think you are way off base with the electric supercharger idea. I don't want to have to wait for some batteries to charge before I can accelerate my 7 passenger mini bus into traffic. Not to mention the additional weight.

    In theory and practicality you would not have to wait at all for battery charging if you set up your system right. This is the beauty of it vs the traditional turbo which needs time to spool up. Also being that its electric completely cuts out the negatives of belt driven parasitic drag like traditional Superchargers.

    You would need an extra 12V battery or you could supply a capacitor bank which in my opinion is a far better option! The capacitor bank can recharge quickly through an integrated Starter Alternator brushless motor that is battery fed and can also function as a generator for regenerative braking functions.

    This is the direction Turbos will move in the future as well.

    The additional weight is actually less than a traditional Turbo set up and is far easier to implement as you only have to deal with the intake side.

    Capacitor banks are super light as well as new lighter batteries that weigh a fraction of standard car starting batteries. The thing is you would only need a single additional battery or small capacitor bank to power the Supercharger. So weight is very minimal. Complete weight would be less than 75lbs installed small weight gain for the increased performance of a non parasitic supercharger that can crank out in excess of 5psi boost very easily again direct without belts robbing the ICE.

    Once you sit down and really think about it and compare it to the alternatives it actually is quite attractive and in my opinion a better option at this point not just from the performance side but also from the cost and implementation side as well.
