is my intake hurting performance?

Hey guys I took my car to the track and wasn't very happy with the outcome. It's a stock bottom end 302, stock cam, canfeild 192s 54cc, and a ported Victor 5.0, with a gt45 on 6lbs of boost. 5 speed car leaving on no boost best 60ft I could pull was a 2.4. On that pass it went 8.0 at 94.6 mph. So I'm wondering if the intake is hurting me down low as the turbo won't spool till about 3800 rpm, or should I put a two step on it and try and get it to leave on some boost? Thanks guys!!

The 68mm gt45? Gear ratio? How is it tuned? Timing?

Adjust your driving style first. What kind of gears do you have in the rearend?

Gonna have to get some runs in so you can get launch and shift points right with the new combo.

68mm yes, 3.27 gear 6lbs of boost, and yes it was tuned on the old master power haven't been back since but the afr is about 11.6 no idea on timing.

Assuming you had a p trim master power? Big difference in turbine there. Forgot to ask tire size.. You may need a little more gear, maybe a 2 step, or may find something in the tune that may help some. I'm guessing the short runner intake isn't helping at all, but wouldn't start there.

275/60s and I believe so on the p trim, I'm going to try some 26x8.5s and gonna get a 2 step for it. I was also kicking around the idea of putting 3.55s in it.

All good places to look. I would still be curious about the tune, and the timing curve. No boost until 3800, even in 4th with some good load? Would have expected it to come in a little earlier. With the 54cc your cr must be 9.5-10ish? Plan to run more than 6 psi?

That was last night on the street it will spool about 2900-3000 but it was just bogging out the hole all last night at the track. On the street that car moves out but it just kept falling on its face, like it had no power but once I got past 60 ft it pulled hard I mean it trapped fast enough to run low 7s. Yes I plan on upping the boost but it's didn't have the boost controller last night. Should be here this week sometime.

Welcome to a sticky tire manual turbo car. I had to put the 2 step at 6k rpms and leave on boost to keep mine from bogging with the same 28" tall tires.

What is it tuned with? As said above I would look at your timing first. If its not boost referenced with a MAP sensor or btm etc.. I'm willing to bet its pulling a bunch too early before you're even in boost.

I have a similar combo and had problems last year with out of boost power. It was good once it got going but my whole shot sucked and the car never really got moving until the 330'.

Your 60' definitely needs some work. With 275 street tires you should be able to hit 2.00 - 2.1 without too much work but thats about it

It's tuned with moats chip. I plan on getting it retuned here soon on more boost. Also going to try my 26x8.5s and a two step. We'll see if that helps any.

I don't think that intake is too bad. If you change gears you might as well put in 3.73s. I used to run 12.3 in the quarter with an old b303 cam that same intake.normally aspirated

I would leave the 3.27s personally. I have 3.55s in my 5spd and think thats killing my boost performance. They were good fun when my car was NA but i think its slowing spool in 1st and 2nd. I feel like i see a lot of turbo 5spd guys going back to 3.27s or even 3.08s The turbos like the load and build boost faster.

I would wait to change anything until you get it all tuned up. It'll probably be a whole new animal without changing any parts. Then go from there

Yeah I'm gonna talk to the tuner tomorrow and see what time he's free to 're tune in.

I can see this, but a 275 is a pretty tall tire when run with a manual, 3.27's, and a fairly large turbine. He may find a big improvement in the tune, but if not, i'd personally rather give up some load early on on, and maybe short shift some. I'm not a manual guy though.

Those intakes ( that design) is actually very nice for even distribution to all cylinders. I have the tubular cobra in my car. I would keep looking. Let your turbo do all the work to those gears, just tune and drive. She and you will come around....

    Its not the intake.
I have a stock bottom end, deep fly cut pistons.
    Canfield 195's 54cc
    Canfield efi single plane intake
    Gt45
    Xe258 208/216 .550
4.30s and 3.27s have been tested.

Car put down 300rwhp @ 6200 with that cam n/a and valve float obvious.
    10psi got me 370rwhp @ 5500rpm
    14psi got me 448rwhp and 123.5 mph @ 12.39 with almost a 2.1 60'. 315/35/17 tires suck.

Btw i tune with the qh also. There is a way to make an anti lag with it btw.

I found the 4.30s helped the launch from no boost @ idle. Boost came in at the same rpm anyway as the 3.27s.
    2700 rpm i get 2psi, 3k 5psi, 3500 10psi, 4k 14+psi.
1st gear or 4th, same rpm.
Its got plenty of load even with 4.30s.
I would be looking for exhaust or boost leaks.

There is one exhaust leak but it's at the down pipe v band. I have got a chance to mess with it yet. But next track day I'm going to try a 26x8.5 and see if it makes a difference and have the tuner out there with me making changes.
