    Hi all,

I recently received my 98 Explorer 5.0 motor. I'm going with a single turbo setup, and I have access to a 19cm non wastegated housing for an HX40 or H1E. If i am only looking to make max 450 whp, will any of the HX40s suit my goal? Is there a specific model that will work better? Looking for full spool around 3500-3750 in 2nd gear. My header setup is a merge to T4 open flange, and I can use a 38mm WG (or I can cut off than flange and upgrade to a 44 or 50). Let me know if I am on the right track.

    Thanks,
    Jake

look for a 7 blade or 6 blade compressor hx40. All the turbine housings should exchange from one hx40 to another. The 8 blade compressor flows the least, but it'll work fo ryour goals. You will just be sort of limited. I'm doing an almost identical build. 01 explorer heads(gt40p) and an hx40w turbo.

itll spool quicker than you think too,

one thing though, Holsets use a t3 housing not a t4

68stang, do you know if people use them in t3 form on 302's? I thought they were t4 flanged, until I got one. I actually have a thread a few posts down from this....wasnt sure if I just got a small one or if they are all like that...

I think this depends on what turbo you have. My H1E's are t4.

Those maps are more imprressive than I thought. What size inducer are those turbos? What are the turbine whell dimensions?

58mm inducer for the "good" ones but a larger than T04 exducer. Not only that I believe the housings themselves are bigger which plays a role too.

oh, I forgot to mention that the lb/min is at the top....so you read from the set of numbers above the graph, the bottom is a diff unit

the few that i have messed with before had t3 flanges on them and from my understanding 302f150, they do flow like a slightly larger turbo. I had a hx35 with t3 housing on my 302 for a bit and it worked fine.

So what is the 6 blade HX40 compressor good for HP wise? Aren't the 4 cylinder guys getting some pretty impressive numbers out of the HX40?

Yes, the DSM crowd and now the BMW crowd are using these more and more. In fact, the SAME HX40 (with a slightly smaller exhaust housing) is being used on 2 liter 4 cylinders and on 2.5 liter straight sixes. That being said, I think the HX40 or H1E with a T4 housing will spool very fast, and still have enough headroom to make some decent power with choking.

the dsm guys use it and run high boost, which is what these were designed for. the 6 blade is good for almost 600hp...rule of thumb is every lb of air is 10hp for gas engines. Running low boost on our engines isn't even pushing these turbos

from what I've been told, the 6 and 7 are 60mm on th ecompressor, the 8 is 58mm, and the turbine is 60mm on the inducer for all 3. I'll tear my hx40(8blade) down and get all the measurements and post them for sure

lol, so I got mine apart and measured it. I have a super rare 60mm 8 blade unit apparently. I wonder what kind of flow this will have....

Awesome! that is the one I am looking for currently. Still a long ways off, but I'd love to get my hand on one. First things first, get the 8.8 swapped into the volvo and then mount the motor and trans.

yeah, should be a very interesting build...idk what I'd do if a volvo was at the track with a turbo 302 lol. And it was brought to my attention that my compressor wheel needs to be replaced b/c of the little chunks missing about halfway down....woohoo.
