What happens when you are pushing a compressor passed it's efficiency? Will it choke the engine and not let it rev freely?

Only the turbine can choke the engine. A small turbine will.

A small compressor you will just hot intake air temps b/c its running out of its efficiency range so you don't make as much horsepower as you raise the boost. The gains will drop. But it will breath more air then naturally aspirated form.
