I figure I start one of these to track my build and all that fun stuff. I've always been interested in turbos and since my last engine build dropped a valve which pretty much destroyed the engine I figure its time.

The car is a 1973 mustang mach 1 q code car. Shes always been a sleeper. Looks like I just pulled it out of a field or a junkyard but that's how I've always liked her.
Probably weighs about 4000 pounds with the big block in it.
It had a 528 ci bbf in it (521 stroker bored 30 over) it dynoed at 580 rwhp. Until it killed itself.

Right now it has a ford 9 inch rear end with a full spool. C6 trans with reverse valve body

I have a 460 freshly bored 60 over stock crank regrinded .010 undersize stock rods. Forged trw pistons.

I plan to keep rpms under 6k so it doesnt explode. Probably closer to 5500 if I can keep myself from doing so lol. Anywho I'm at work right now and thought I'd start this thread while I have a few minutes to spare. Cant wait to share and get this thing going. Thanks yall

here you can see the carnage that ensued after the valve drop alot happened.

Here's a picture of the start of this swap. Me new engine up front a 460 bored 60 over has forged pistons stock rods and crank. Arp connecting rod bolts. The first thing I'm gonna do is pull the pistons and replace the rings or just regap them if they look new. But I think it's a safer bet to just replace them all with new rings.

So today I pulled out all of my pistons and started cleaning them up to get them ready for the new rings. And I got to get a good look at the cylinder walls and main bearings. Main bearings have some slight wear. Tomorrow my rings will finally show up. I'll get them gapped and put back in. Hopefully I can work on it tomorrow alittle not sure. 20191112_140859.jpg #ad

I'm not 100 percent sure yet. I have been chipping away at this one piece at a time. Researching before I get the next part. I've heard gt45s do pretty good for chinese knock offs. I also considered the turbos off the powerstroke because of that gnarly whistle they have when they spool. But 2 of those may be to much for this engine. But I am kind of new to choosing the correct turbo size for applications so I am open to all suggestions

2 powerstroke turbos may not be enough with good aftermarket heads.

Dang I was figuring 2 6.0 or 7.3 turbos would be enough lol

Good thing I am replacing these rings I found cylinder number 5s ring was broken. I also found a few of the rod bearings to be pretty scared up so I got a new set of bearings coming in for them also 20191113_112744.jpg #ad

Got my rings in today and started gapping them, I also ordered a new set of rod bearings cause the ones that were in it were trashed. 20191113_150123.jpg #ad

My next obstacle after I get these rings done and the pistons back in is what cam am I going to use as well as what heads am I going to choose. I have a crane hydraulic roller 359351 .590/.614 lift 228/238 @.050 that would be decent for the rpm range but it has to much overlap. I have another crane hydraulic flat tappet .599 lift 248/248 @.050 that's rpm range is way to high for a stock rods. I mean it could work but I wouldn't get the full power range of the cam. After talking to @B E N I might run with same cam he put in his engine. .540/.552 lift 219/227 @.050

For heads I'm looking at trickflow powerport heads with a 78cc combustion chamber which would give me 8.8:1 compression with my headgasket measuring at .060 compressed Screenshot_20191113-085327_eBay.jpg #ad

Your pistons are seriously .036" down from the deck? That seems excessive.

That’s what i measured. I’ll double check again to be sure. I don’t believe the engine has ever been decked. Compared to my other engine it has a pretty noticeable gap at tdc. My other engine the piston comes almost flush at tdc. I’ve read in other forums that when pistons get changed out sometimes the the piston can be up to .040 in the hole. Maybe this is one of those instances. I will measure again to make sure once I get the pistons back in the block.

there are different compression heights on 460s. Seems like Ive seen .010 diff called out when looking at buying pistons. My stock ones where 025 in the hole.

One of my 460's had measurements like that, it was a rebuilt short block that had originally been ordered from Checkers. What head gaskets are you using the are .060" thick?

It is an mls gasket I'll get the part number and a picture. While I was searching I couldn't seem to find any under .060 for my bore size.

Go with .045 or smaller compressed thickness to bump comp ever so slightly, jmho

You think 9:1 is the best compression to shoot for? It probably be close to 9:1 with a .045

    Yes. Or 9.5 if possible.
