Can someone please explain how hooking up a manual boost controller in the configuration shown in the picture below (external gate) could increase boost beyond spring pressure. It looks as though it would be working against the wastegate spring and not assisting it to help keep the gate closed longer to increase boost. Looks to be backwards.... Am I missing something ?

have a question on that as well...

Pressure source referece have to be on the turbo compresser housing? or can it be anywhere before the BOV/intercooler?

Yes, you can use any source of boost, and even control pressure at the throttle body instead of pressure at the turbo this way. Putting it before the throttle body may not be the best idea due to the pressure differential there, and the fact that if you close the throttle under boost it could cause the gate to close and a pressure spike.

In regards to how a manual boost controller works, there's a seat a ball and a spring in most of em. The ball has so much area exposed to the inlet pressure (the seat) and the spring provides X amount of force to counter this. When the spring's force is less than the pressure's force it unseats and pressure is allowed to go to the waste gate. This is contrary to a typical waste gate which starts opening hte moment it sees hardly any boost, as well as allowing you to run boost levels higher than the spring you have in the gate at the time.

So if there is no hose running from the manifold pressure source to the bottom side of wastegate (acting against spring) then the wastegate would not open as soon and boost would be higher ? If that's the case then more boost is accomplished by restricting the amount of air pressure going thru the boost controller and reaching the wastegate.

I think I get it now.
