This article is a short guide to EEC-IV and EEC-V PCM removal and installation for the following vehicles:

1988 - 2004 Ford Mustang including special editions such as the Mustang Cobra

Note, you can click any of the images for a larger version of the image. On the Mustang the PCM is located inside the passenger compartment on the passenger side behind the "kick panel".

    Remove steps:

    - Make sure the key is not in the ignition.

    - Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.

    - Remove the plastic door sill panel. You do this by gently prying it off with your hands, be care not to damage any of the mounting tabs. Some years may also have a screw holding this plastic panel down, if so remove it.

    - Remote the plastic kick panel. To do this, put your hand behind it where the mounting tab is and pull straight out, being careful not to damage the tab.

    - After the kick panel is removed you'll see the PCM. There will be several electrical harness connectors in this area, the exact layout depends on the year of the car. Move these harnesses away from the computer, some might be bolted to the inner body sheet metal and these bolts will need to be removed.

    - The computer is held in place with a plastic cage. Do not remove the cage, but do remove the bolts holding the cage to the inner body sheet metal. Depending on year these bolts will be either 7mm or 8mm.

    - Completely loosen but do not remove the 10mm bolt from the center of the PCM wiring harness. This bolt holds the harness to the PCM. Move the PCM wiring harness out of the way and pull the computer down and out.

Installation is the reverse of the above steps.

Note: I could not find the photos from my older installation guides in order to write this article. Images came from threads in our forums. If someone can pull off the passenger side kick panel on their Mustang and send me a picture of the PCM mounted to the inner body sheet metal I'll update this article with your photo. This would be extremely helpful for anyone reading this article.
