I want to start this by saying i am only 20 and i have zero experience when it comes to turbos, efi, and building performance car engines, i build race dirtbike engines so i know engines but this is my first time tackling any sort of car build. I have an old 350 sbc sitting in the shed, it will be going into a small car so im trying to keep it physically smaller if possible. I need recommendations for literally everything for the build, i would like to run a large turbo or twin turbos, be fuel injected, manual transmission, and as high hp as possible while still being able to run on pump gas, 6-700 would be great if something like that could run on high octane pump gas. Im not worried about price but obviously it would be nice to keep it lower. Imagine i have just the block, where should i start? Recommend bottom end parts or kits? ideal bore and stroke size? Kits or brands for cylinders and rest of top end? Top end? Efi intake and wiring that can handle boost? What size turbo or twin? Recommend transmission for that much power to use for a street car? Recommend fuel pump? Like i said, i am capable of the build i just dont know enough about car engine building to know what to use or where to start, any help would be great, thanks.

It might be cheaper to use a running Gen 4 4.8 or 5.3 LS than rebuilding a old Chevy 350. A pair of gt3582 turbos or a single s475 could make the power. What kind of small car do you have?

Its an 01 ford focus body so it was originally fwd, so im really limited on space. Ill look into the price for one of those, i just have a couple of the 350 engines around so I figured it would be good to learn them.

By the time you have the car set up for RWD it will be a different engine bay. It's hard to recommend turbo setup with that in mind.

I agree with @91turboterror, for the price of a good set of SBC heads you can have a used LS that will make 600-700 with nothing but a turbo.

there used to be a v8 Ford 5.0 conversion for the focus. So am LS would fit in there . You’d have to get creative to stick turbo( s) in there.

I am gunna stick with the 350 engine just to not have the same engine as all the other builds these days, i guess where im starting here is what manual 5 or 6 speed manual trans would everyone recommend for this that can handle 700hp, and everything i will need to bolt said trans to engine. Also what for intake manifold or what to have more room for the hood to close?

For a 5 speed a tko 600 or TKX should handle it and for a 6 speed a t56 magnum/tr6060 will fit the bill.

Start by sending the block, and main caps to a reputable machine shop for cleaning, sonic check, before you do anything. At that hp level I wouldn't waste time with stock crank, rods, pistons etc. The kind of power you want to make is a pretty serious build, not a budget build at all. Might be a good time to consider a purpose built short block. You can easily spend 1200 or more bringing a stock block into spec and adding splayed main caps. Serious question here.. have you ever driven a 3500 pound car that puts down an honest 350-375 rear wheel horsepower? Most haven't, and it scares the hell out of them, is not very street able, if all you want is something to do but puts and play with, go get a pullout 5.3, put a cam, valve springs in it. Stock transmission with a 2500-2700 rpm torque converter and decent gears. Put in a 3300 pound car with 3.73 gears .. and it's probably way more than you're going to want to live with on the street.not trying to discourage you at all. Just I do not think you really understand what a 500 rwhp street car is.and when you say the starting point is an old unknown engine you have. Well, you can easily spend 14,000 and not reach the goal.

But a crate engine that is rated at 450-500 hp.. put a turbo kit on it. You'll be money, time, and aggravation ahead. Don't be afraid of a 400 from blueprint, smeding, CNC Motorsports, etc. You won't build it cheaper than they can unless you have a machine shop that will do the work for free. But my original comment stands.. any vehicle that puts down an honest 1 hp per every 100 pounds it weighed will be a lot of fun, and relatively reliable. Once you get into anything with 1.5 hp per cubic inch it's not a gas and go type vehicle anymore. Go test drive a 2012-2016 6.0 Camaro. Then come back and tell us if it satisfies all the things you think you want. It will probably surpass your desires and be very reliable, street able too. Then in time as you become aquanted with it's power you can begin to modify it. But you're post suggests that you want to go from the cradle to doing 9 seconds and it's not realistic, it's a good way to get hurt, spend a lot of money and be disappointed. What high performance vehicles do you have experience with? Maybe that's a good starting point to begin this discussion, I'm not trying to insult you, just get you to realize that 600-650 hp is not simple, easy, and requires so many things that are clearly beyond your comprehension and ability. Find a car at a dealership that has some miles on it, a c5-c6 Corvette.. drive it then come back and talk to us
