guess it’s not so cheap now. Can’t really see how the cylinder walls look.

Just an excuse to build it.... I have a set of Molnar rods, and manley pistons here that would fix that right up.

Guess I shouldn’t have already bought a turbo . The goal was about 450 . The cylinder wall looks like it has a thin layer flaked out of it . Maybe just piston stuck around it . I can’t believe how hot they got it . There is a complete 04 on Craigslist pretty cheap . Was hoping to run the computer from the 08 for motor and trans .

Sleeve the one cylinder, drop in a fresh piston, open up the ring gaps on everything and go!

I would say look for another as the early engines are cheap, but if using the stock ecm, you want the 08. As the others said, I would try to fix it, or buy an early engine, and swap the crank, and head.

I would be tempted to run. Bottle brush though that hole and see what it looked like. I am sure people have done worse than just throwing a use piston, and crossing their fingers.

If I could get the pan off with it in there ,I would prob just replace the back two and let it rip . I started tearing it down more today . Being 4 wheel drive it is a pain .

To all - does everyone think it is just a coincidence that ring-gap, valve relief and pre-ignition/detonation damage all line up?

Interesting observation. Furthest point from the spark source?

I appreciate you leading this horse to water, but I am not sure what you are getting at. I just assumed it happened there because it looks like the weakest point in the piston.

No leading here. Just curious if anyone has noticed a relationship or is it just chance.

Figured I would update what I ended up doing on this . Ended up honing the cylinder and there ended up being a spot about the size of a pencil lead . Ordered some eBay pistons cleaned everything up and put it together . With a single ball u really can’t see it but a three stone it shows up .

The head was a different story . I wasn’t going to spend the money to take it to machine shop so the hackery began . Set a straight edge on cam journals and it was a no go . Flipped it over and measured .030 in center . Put it in a press and got it to where the cam journals looked good and the cams would spin free bolted up . It was distorted around the chambers so we put it on a head sander after we took some of the sheet metal off to get it to fit . Lapped the valves , put together three it in and these engines run really smooth . I wish I was better at taking pics but these are all I have .
