I know this an old thread but wouldn't gear to gear timing allow use of a Ford cam?

After reading you're first post here, you appear to know everything, so you tell us...lol. gear to gear as in spinning it backwards? As long as the port layout is the same the heads dont care what firing order or what cam is in it. If the port layout is different, you need a custom cam. With all the good sbf heads out there, i personally dont see it as a good swap.

this is a sbf heads (Edelbrock SC1 heads on a Chevy LS block. Length of the block (lineup the bolt holes) is definitely better but still not right on. Side to side bolt holes are about one-third off.

Me and a friend did one of these. We used a 351 shortblock and a pair of stock ls1 heads. We butchered a ls1 carbed intake manifold ran a ford distributor and a mallory ignition box. We ran it on the stand only. Never got it into a car. By the time we made it make hot water and piss oil all over itself out of all the questionable sealing surfaces we realized as in most cases it was just so much more cost effective and time effective to buy a set or afr's and move on. There was a bunch of stuff that made it dodgy. Just wait till you get into the valve train geometry and push rod shenanigans.
I'll see if I can find some pictures of the sins we committed.
