Tips for starting an old engine

    Hey guys,

    I have two motors that have been sitting for some time and have some questions about getting them started. One is a 351 that is sitting in the engine bay of my mustang for well over ten years. It did run when I pulled it out of a crown vic police interceptor but for the last ten + years it has had the intake off of it (hood is on the car), car is in a dry garage. I know new fuel, oil, coolant, ext... but other than oiling down the cylinders is there anything I would want to to aside from taking the while thing apart before tossing a cam/ lifters in it the intake back on and turning it over?

    Motor number 2 is a 302 that is sealed/ complete sitting in a mountaineer that was parked due to a bad started 7 years ago. This one I'm thinking of pulling the plugs and pouring some marvel mystery down the cylinders (similar to what I'm going to do to the above 351), then replacing plugs, fuel, coolant, and oil.

    Any suggestions or tips? Thanks

    Just prime them prior to starting. Oil in the cylinders is a good idea to let sit for a few days. I feel like it helps the oil rings unstick from sittinng Bar them over by hand first. On shit that has not started for many many moons I like to use a break in or high zinc oil. Not sure it does anything but it makes me feel like it does or should anyway.

    I fill the cylinders with atf and let sit a few days. As said above, turn it over by hand a few times, but leave the plugs out. Get a fresh battery on it and fresh oil in it, try to funnel the oil into both valve covers to get the most oil on the cam, and disable the fuel and ignition. Spin it over with the starter until you have good oil pressure. You'll have a mess when it kicks the atf out of the cylinders, but this is the best way to keep pressure off the bearings until you can get oil back in them. Then screw some fresh sparkers in and crank it up and hope the cam lives.

    I've done this maybe twice in my life. I pulled plugs and show Marvel Mystery Oil in all the cyl. Let that sit for a day or three. Then came back and cranked over by hand. Then dropped the oil and filled with fresh. Then cranked engine over with no plugs in it to get the crap out the cylinders and allow the engine to rotate unloaded while oil got around. Then put some fuel in the bowls and fresh plugs in the holes and let er rip. Worked OK so far.

    Thanks for the reply's guys! Glad to see I was on the right page. The mountaineer motor is going into my ranger so all new fluids is happening. I should have mentioned hand turning them over was also in the plans. Turning over with the starter and plugs out until oil pressure comes up is a good idea too. I'm going to be running the Mountaineer motor with all the factory EFI stuff. What are your guys thoughts on the injectors sitting for so long? Worth sending them out to be cleaned?

    Yes. In my opinion. At least if you are going to use them for the forseeable future. If big injectors are in the plans, might be the time to just step up and get them sooner then later.
    I bought a nice injector flow bench awhile back, and have since been amazed at how plugged, stuck, leaky, old injectors are. It makes me cringe how many times I must have used crappy poor flowing injectors over the years before the bench investment was made.

    I've been having terrible luck lately with injectors that have been sitting. I'd go ahead and send em out.

    You don’t happen to clean and test injectors do you?

    Yes I do. Flow test, clean, retest. I have recently been inundated with gm de-caps. That and spec miata injectors. Those guys will spend ALL the money to make 1 more HP.

    Man. Hellcat injectors are going for $200 all day for a set of 8. Add some spacers and the will fit anything. Not a bad unit at 600 cc.

    I agree, but that has not seemed slow down the decapping of stockers.
