well another update, this one not so good sometimes this car tests my patience and eventually my bank account.

so ill start from the start,

i had been home from work for a bit over a week trying to get this back together and going eventually i gave up friday arvo.

so i had it all ready to start so i thought i was a little worried that when it fired it was only running on a few cylinders and as soon as you tried to open the throttle it would just stop.

so i get the laptop out and hook it up to the ecu and try again still no good it actually coffee back thru the turbo so in my haste to get it going i try again this time it just let out a great bang engine hardly turned over so i stop and have a good look around and notice a tooth on the ground from the starter i thought shit thats no good. so i sit down an have a think about it and decide to pull all the manifolds back off and replace starter motor.

while i was doing this i notice coolant on the ground at the rear of the engine and then proceeded to trace the coolant leak back to the number 5 plug hole is full.i realise at this point its not looking good.
so i rip into the manifolds then once i get the intake off i notice number 2 port is full with fuel as well as number 5 port full of coolant.

so once i get the head off stat looking for a crack or the like in the combustion chamber carnt find it look in the bore all looks good in there then i flip the head over and fill it with water and sure enough i believe it looks like a porous casting or the like a small pin hole in the roof of the intake port.

so i think are no worries ill get my good mate to weld it up he did all the welding on this car so far. then once we tried to weld it it just keeps cracking. not sure if it needs to be heated and some hight silicon filler rods used or what but in time if i can find a reputable shop that is very familiar with this sort of work ill send it away to them as atm its just scrap.

so ive put an order in for a brand new j zed head bare as i will just use all my valves and stuff as the springs, retainers, valves, collets were brand new .ive not got a price as yet but im thinking around 5k bare and not ready till at least october so im going to push the car in the corner of my shed ive got the block back out as its easier to put it together on the engine stand.i will also slip a new set of big end shells in aswell just to be sure.

so the stuck mre injector ive blew it backwards and it cleared out i had sent these back to atomiser injectors to be cleaned and stuff but they didnt come back with the little strainer filter in them as jack says theres to much flow variance with them fitted so i will look and putting them back in aswell as i must have got some debris in the fuel system while its been apart thats why it stuck open but i recon that could be very dangerous if it happens again..

so all in all ive had a busy week but the sheds a mess and the engine is back out. i will keep this eng configuration im in way finished with these yet although it is getting expensive to keep going this way.

ill be taking one of my other cars to the car event next month in alice springs.

i have a few photos ill upload them today.

    cheers

Wow that is sooo unfortunate to hear.
They do have a way of trying your patience and wallet at times.

    Thanks for the update.
Here is to hoping the positive update posts come soon.

I've been going through this thread over the last week or so- some great workmanship going into the engine details, and it's great to see the humble Holden six still being tinkered with and improved on. Bit of a bugger with your recent mishap, I've got high hopes that you'll sort it out and get the old girl singing again.
I noticed in one of your previous iterations that you were running an MSD distributor- was it adapted off another engine or did they make them for Holden Sixes once upon a time?
Look forward to the next instalment of updates.

    Hi Ben,

    Thanks for looking.

I used to import them and mod them (chev 6)I’ve got a few left I can supply them with a bronze drive gear or a iron one but they are expensive and I’ve been busy with other projects so I haven’t pushed the sale of them for some years.

If you’d like more info on them best to email me

    Cheers.

    short update,

ive been trial fitting the egts ,looks like they will fit this is the second attempt of getting some to fit.just need to drill the pipes now the bungs are already welded on thankfully.

ive got 2 sets of diff gears 3.7 and 3.5 I'm going to put the 3.5 in.

dads fixed the converter to flex plate thread as for some reason it picked up coming out so ill put the converter back in in the next few days.

looks like theres some kind of delay in getting a new head made my patience is running rather low in waiting on a new one, at this stage im unsure if ill even get one.

so im hoping to get my one repaired in the next few weeks ,as much as id like to stick to these engines its getting tempting to put another engine type in it.

ive got another set of rods and pistons getting made for it atm.

    cheers H

This is one of my all-time favorite threads on this forum. I'd hate to see you give up on the little red motor, but your frustration is certainly understandable. Keep up the great work!!

Agree that half of my fascination is the motor build. But also agree the frustration and $$$ has to conclude sometime.

    hi just a short update,

still no sign of the new jzed head I'm doubting ill even see a new one.i have had a few dreamers say they have one laying around but no proof and they seem to go quite once i ask for photos, I'm thinking if i can find a new one somewhere in the country ill just fly there and pick it up but seems no one has one.

heres the result of the first pressure test now I've made all the plates to cover the holes. its going back to a good mates to get welded today.

I've put 20psi into the water jacket so far not sure how much pressure i should go I've herd of people putting upto 60psi into the water jacket.

yes I'm going to exhaust all avenues to keep the red motors but with the lack of a serviceable head or a new one that i made all the manifolds to suit ill have no option but to go away from them .seems a waste of my time and a lot of other peoples time and effort if i have to go away from them.

one good thing tho at least all the computer gear is already in the car when the 2j goes in.

    cheers.

Would there be any way to apply a thin layer of some sort of sealing epoxy to the inside of the water jackets in the cylinder head? I realize it would be difficult to insure a thin, even layer was applied, but perhaps it could help?

What is the issue getting a new JZED head? Have they stopped making them?

I have herd of people pulling a vacuum on old porous alloy heads to pull sealant into cracks and the like but I’m not interested in doing that it seems like a big band aid.

Unfortunately i don’t know what the hold up this time is I have herd others have waited a lot longer than I have im not interested in waiting another year to get one that then needs a lot of work to bring it up to a usable level.

I can see at this point forward it’s going to get very costly to get it going with a new head or repowering it with a 2jz engine. I guess in the coming few months I’ll make a call on the direction I take.

    Cheers.

Definitely a tough spot to be saddled with.
Best of luck with your decision.

Your initial direction is admired by many.
However, there comes that point in time...

so ill add some pictures today or tomorrow I've been busy building a dedicated engine building room in my shed here at home.

ive also made the decision to persist with the current engine combo I'm told ill have the new jzed head in july sometime, although im not sure on cost of it yet ill only be getting the casting and ill put all my gear in it.this was not a decision i made lightly.

so ill need to do some work on the new head when it arrives klines to suit my valves, valve seats, clearance for my pushrods, valve spring clearance to name a few so its not a straight drop on an go.

ill also be getting it flow tested and touched up if needed.

in the next few weeks ill be slipping a new set of big end bearings in the short block while its out incase something went south when it locked up.

    Cheers H

This was an amazing build! Really stinks that the head failed!
That head looks like it would fit my Chevy 250... does anyone know then compatibly between the Holden and the Chevy?
Keep at it... it’s a glorious car!

heres some pics of my engine clean room i built this was my first time ever building anything out of timber so im impressed how it came out. im just going to get a stainless steel top for the bench inside i have 2k sealed the top of the bench already.

the engine wrapped up is the turbo engine i will have a look at replacing the big ends in the coming weeks if all goes to plan. the other that is sitting on the makeshift stand is the old aspirated engine im just waiting on getting it back together so i can seal it up and put it away.

    cheers H
