God, I’m an idiot

    I could be totally wrong on this, but every other iron intake i've seen is cast iron, not steel....much tougher to weld iron. Aluminum is easy to fix for most any competent welder.

    Really? I could have swore the guy said aluminum would be the easiest at the shop here.

    Little bit of 70S or even 309L and you're on your way without even having to preheat.

    If you cracked it on accident without getting midevil on the thing, its aluminum.

    Every place I looked online too said it was aluminum, but for some reason I get a real strong attachment with the two magnets I tried.

    The pics you're showing are of the lower intake. If it's a Lightning lower, it's aluminum. i'd say 99% of EFI two piece (upper/lower) intakes are aluminum.

    I think I've read that the marine 351 gt40 lowers were cast iron.

    No sir, you aren’t wrong, I’m incompetent. Two very different things.

    I’ll keep everyone updated as I find out a solution good or bad about this intake. Today, I drained the coolant and began disassembly. Funny, all the work I put in for the Holley hp install is now for naught.

    I was running the heat gun and tapping the corners with a mallet. Intake couldn’t budge, not even with leverage from the water outlet/thermostat housing. I’m proud of how hardcore the previous owner sealed this thing up.

    I had to walk away. I was getting pissed and my eye started twitching. I wish the local church was closer and open, I’d like to stop by and cool off.

    You are correct. At least to my knowledge
    I used to work for a place that was a Ford Motorsport dist. and we bought 20 marine 351's that ford was trying to unload. They all had cast lower GT40's. They were essentially lightning engines they built for Mercruiser if I remember right. For some reason all the lowers were iron and all the uppers were AL. The uppers were 94-95 cobra with a mercruiser plaque

    We ripped the manifolds off, hung edelbrock airgaps and holleys on them and sold them to hot rod guys like hot cakes. Wish we would have bought all ford had to offer.

    Pry on the ends between the block and intake. Should pop right up. Will probably have to drive the pry bar (flathead screwdriver) in to get past the silicone or cork. Tapping aint gonna do it.

    Thank you man, just got it about twenty minutes ago.

    Now I need to get this bad boy clean/ degreaser and transported to the welder when he has time.

    I’m bad.
    The lower is cast iron, not steel. I guess I did not have enough morning coffee in me when I posted.
    As others have mentioned the marine version of the 351w gt40 lower is cast iron. Like I said it might be tricky trying to weld it up so that it works. Welding a cast intake would be more difficult I assume than a cast iron exhaust manifold.
    Post pics of the repair once you get it back.

    Welding cast isn't that bad once you have the right tools, and have done it a few times. It will turn out fine!

    Also, I don't think that's powdercoat. It looks like rattlecan to me...

    I'd cut a slot in the crack , and just MIG it.
