Vehicle is a 1997 F-350 with a 7.3L. I have very little in and out shaft play on my turbo. Pulled and disassembled it. Looks like a bearing barely wore into the backplate. Other than that truck ran good and turbo internals look good. What would cause this? Can I reuse the backplate and get a rebuild kit and call it good? Also I have a spare center section with no play in it I was going to swap but they are different designs. One has snap rings and one has nothing. Also the shaft on one of them has a recessed section and the other doesn’t. Can someone explain that for me? 08DA3BDC-5C65-4F9A-884A-C62E31B4A46A.jpeg #ad

1.) I would look for a new backing plate. They are plentiful and cheap.
2.) In all my TP and GTP builds I've never seen any center sections with snap rings. So wonder if that is a Garrett knockoff? Or maybe a BorgWarner style TP38?
3.) The Turbine wheel with the step down between the bearing surface is a typical Garrett TP38 turbine wheel. Again never seen one that didn't have that step. So possibly it could be related to that snapring center section.

I don't think that is a snap ring as much as it is the oil seal. Those shafts are definitely different and the bearing surface of the shaft without the necked down area looks to be longer.
