I am totally new to turbos but I have been wrenching nearly all my life so I understand the principles of a turbo but I have never been exposed to them. First I will explain what I drive and it's engine build to make sure this project is even feasible and doable. The vehicle is a 1989 Isuzu Trooper 2.8 GM v6 w/ 5 speed, the engine is bored .040 over and stroked with a 3.1 crank making it a 3.2. Compression was left at about 8.5 to 9.0, It has a Comp 252 cam, 1.6:1 roller tip rockers ,Comp springs, lifters and push rods. The intake was milled out to 1&11/16" and uses a TBI from a 4.3 and the smaller 2.8 injectors. Fuel management is done with a stock ECM from a 3.1 Rodeo. Exhaust was upgraded to 2.25 from the Y back. Estimated HP is now about 160 just by figuring a base of 125 and adding up the mods. The Trooper sits on 31s and a final drive of 4.56 but it still runs out of power on hills or headwind so the the thoughts of a turbo have reared it's head. All advice and ideas would be appreciated. Thanks Dave

I started here. A lot of good explanation in there.
But I'm new to turbos too so I can't help you much. I'm still learning. But this will help you calculate what your engine needs. I am now trying to understand how to use this information correctly. And find enough compressor maps to plot my calcs on.

    Are you good at math?
I used excel to make spread sheet with the equations. Hope this helps

Find a stock GN turbo and stick it on there or a Chinese T3/T4 hybrid. Use a carb bonnet, add fuel via some 350 cop car injectors or early 454 injectors. The 60 degree engines have a pretty good rep on thirdgen.org for taking boost. I will say I'm not sure if the manifolds flip or not, but I'd give it consideration. If not, just build a log manifold that looks similar to a Grand National one and stick the turbo up front if it fits.

You'll need fuel as well, so I would probably plan on a FP upgrade as well. Tuning, well the easiest route would probably be a Megasquirt II unless you can figure out how to hack a GM ECU to do what you need to. EBL may be an option.

I would think an hy35 or he351cw would work well too.
