hello, i am currently rebuilding my 78 trans am. has a pontiac 400 thats 0.030" over. makes it a 406. i am looking to go turbo with the car. and would like some advice on whats the best choice for internals. thanks in advance.

 

Forged pistons and get a set of decent rods, forged h-beam. Pontiac cast rods are junk. Look for the casting code on the block, Pontiac made a block that ended in code 557 these are a thin casting which is not ideal for a boost build. If your ta motor is original it should have an xx code which are good for about 800hp
The stock smog heads have a good thick deck and work good for a street build. All and all Pontiac motors work good with boost just add a s475 or 80 and have fun!

 

Start by picking out a goal. Whether it be ET, or HP and then build to that. If all you want is 500hp, then you don't need to change anything on the motor.

 

i did check the block. it is a 557 block. thanks for the info. i am going for ET. i really want to build a boosted pontiac motor. considering my family is all pontiac family. this was my dads build that past away when i was in the service. so i am just continuing what he set out to do... if all else fails i am willing to do a LS build with the car.
