You guys that use a scavange pump to pump oil back to the engine, what kind of notification do you have to know that the pump still pumps while driving.
Some sort of pressure switch with bright light in the line to the engine ? what psi ?
Becouse of the noise of the engine I do not hear my pump, ofcoarse if the exhaust blows blue smoke then that would be a message that the pump is dead :D

The whole light thing doesn't really work I see guys use it for fuel pumps too. The problem is the power to turn on the indicator light comes from the power to the pump motor. If the motor gives out or the pump impeller fails. You will still have power to said pump to light the light even though its not working. Best bet is to just check it out from time to time. To make sure its still running and pumping.

There typically shouldn't be any pressure (or very little) in your return line so a pressure switch really doesn't work. The smoke will tell you when it quits pumping..lol

Although not perfect, I do have my lighted boost gauge powered off the same hot line as my scavenge pump. If the pump looses power for any reason I will know immediately.
As for any other issues, I'm going to rely on smoke in the rear view mirror (I really hope not to have to deal with that).

I'm betting with a high end pump (Exa pump) the biggest risk is a loss of power (fuse popping, etc.) The pump and Boost gauge are on their own circuit fused, and directly to the battery. All connections are soldered and heat shrink used.

If your using an exa pump, make sure you de-burr were the oil in/out was tapped on the pump. Mine had a bunch of pretty big brass burr's left. They would surely have jammed the pump, or worked back to my motor.

I'm like Dono2 if my pump stops it will start to smoke like crazy. I stopped and got gas fired it up and before I got out of the station it started smoking pretty bad I don't forget to turn the pump on anymore LOL!

I'd probably forget again anyway. I can be a bit slow.
I use a relay with the key being the fuel pump live wire.
If the fuel pump is running, so is my scavenge pump.

I know rear mount 'kits' tend to come with hobbs switches, but I think about the time you see a light saying there is high pressure, you would see smoke anyway.
I guess you could wire a hobbs switch in to the ignition using a relay so the ignition cuts out, when there is low pressure. Maybe a quick google search would tell you the pressure of the hobbs switch that STS uses. Its really more complexity than there needs to be. I'd bet this system can, and does, trip even when there isn't an issue.

I don't see how a hob switch would work off a pressure switch and you can get adjustable ones anyway. But I have checked my return off the 1/2 line going to the front of the motor there is not a constant pressure.

I noticed the same thing. STS systems do use a hobbs switch though. Im not sure how its configured to actually work. Maybe there is 1 or 2psi vacuum in-between the turbo outlet and the scavenge pump?

Pavementpounder, I hope some good ideas have been given, please share your thoughts. Were all looking for good ideas.

Great. I think i try a hobs switch with as liw as possible pressure. Mine pump runs of the ignition key so i wont forget.

The only reason mine is hooked to just a switch is I have not hooked up a timer relay yet so when I switch the car off I leave the pump on for a minute.

That's a great idea. Those timers are on ebay really cheap, and this would be a good application.

I'm not having any issues at all with smoke, or oil. I think I'll leave well enough alone (at least for now). I'm a bit concerned about how the pump handles -35* temperatures this winter. Being stranded with the truck not running at those temperatures does not excite me one bit. I'll be sure to carry a spare higher amp fuse just in case the higher load of the cold and really cold oil pop the fuse. That, and I'll be trying out 0w30 oil.

The pump is definitely a concern of a rear mount, but for me its been an excellent trade off (I say that now, as I have had zero issues).

Well, at least the turbo will do a pretty good job of warming up the oil....:encouragement: :coolio:

LOL yep that's cold Burrrrrrrr! If I was you I would wait and when it gets that cold do a test on it with the line in a bucket just to check flow at that temp.

Would you want to stand out in that cold holding a bucket and an oil return line? I hate cold. Brings me to the next logical question.....WTF am I doing here?

I was looking around for some kind of an amp light. Something that either goes on, or off with no draw.
    No real success yet.

A light, or a buzzer would be a good thing.
