Welds are lookin good. Last vid was a total tease so can't wait for something good. Still using an everlast welder for the tig welding?

Yeah, still using the Everlast. I replaced the torch with one designed for grown-ups and i'm really diggin' this machine. The only other thing i need to do is upgrade the pedal...the control is less than stellar to say the least. I made a few mods so its better, but a pedal upgrade will happen as soon as funds allow!

Just read through the entire thread and, wow! Some amazing fab/machine work on this build. Coming from a mechanical engineering background, and working on CAD programs daily to pay the bills its amazing to me the caliber of work that went into all of this. Congrats!

Also glad you got the AEM figured out, I am a self taught user myself and know how it can really be a pain in the ass sometimes, but figure out how to tell it what you want it to do and it will do it every time. Definitely one of my favorite purchases for my build, and fits right in there on your project with that intake. Actually come to think of it, you guys come up with anything trick on where you mounted the AEM box?

Now if only I could somehow get you to build me an exhaust like that... So sick!

Any pics of the ARB? Like to see how it all fits with the exhaust.

I was wanting to see the same thing. If I remember right, didn't you guys have to move the down links inward towards the chunk?

Here are the pics from when it all went together -

Shaun said he's going to get better close-ups of the tubing tonight, but AFAIK none of the ARB hardware had to be moved. It sure didn't get moved when we finished the exhaust, anyway.

Shaun took these today. Obviously these are with the car in the air. Maybe we'll get a few with the car on the ground (using our periscope) if these fail to deliver answers:

Sorry, for some reason I am not getting email notices from this thread. Here is where we are at:

    - Paul finished porting the heads and stuck in some inconel exhaust valves and slightly bigger SS intake valves
    - I picked up a set of Jesel pro seriies 1.7 roller tip rockers
    - Don Bailey is currently working on a cam for us

In the mean time, we have been working on the hydroboost conversion for about 2 hours. Once we get the heads and cam back we will be back into high gear and have some more updates. The goal is to have this back together and ready to be re-tuned by Aaron when he visits from Switzerland June 18th.

    thanks,
    Shaun

Hi everyone, sorry for the lack of updates! For some reason i get email notifications for every thread i'm subscribed to except for this one!

The heads are done, the new Don Bailey magic Zima cam is in, and the car is back on the road.

    - Paul finished the heads and they came out really nice (for being a really small head for this motor). We kind of boned ourselves making the ITB runners to match a 1250 gasket (as opposed to the 1262 or 1262r like we should have). Even with the really small port opening, the flow numbers were around 300/225 peak, port was a tiny 178cc. He stuck in 2.05 SS intake valves, 1.60 inconel ex valves, adult Manley springs, titanium retainers, etc. I also slapped on a set of Jesel pro series shaft mount rockers after i picked up on Don's subtle hints, "oh yeah, those stud mount rockers are going to rip right out of the heads."
    - Anthony put the ITB runners in the mill and opened them up as much as he could w/o interfering with the o-rings. There is definitely some flow to be gained by a bit more massaging of the inside of the runner, but there will be time for that later.
    - Don Bailey did an awesome job on the cam. I won't divulge his magic, but lets say duration is over [email protected] and the lift is over .700. Vacuum stayed the save vs the old cam (230/240, .600/.600), 9-10" at idle (which is awesome for ITBs).

The result of all of this? The car drives like stock and idles at 900rpm. The car idled rougher with the F303 cam. Seriously. Between the new heads and cam, Aaron had to add over 20% more fuel across the whole map. Aaron believes that, aside from Don's secret cam kung fu, the ITB's are the secret to a smooth idle since most of the loping is due to reversion interrupting the intake charge to other cylinders.

The bad news is that Aaron has only been in town 2 times this summer so we still aren't done tuning. Since he left in June, we did more testing, and noticed we were blowing through the converter. There was no RPM drop between shifts whatsoever. So i sent the converter to PTC, they pulled it apart, and then they laughed. They rattled off a list of what was in the PI converter i sent them and said i was seeing around 50% slip. So i took their advise and ordered up one of their 9.5" spragless jobbers (yes, jobbers) with a steel stator. We got this in the car, and then the trans started making noises and not shifting, so we yanked that and gave it to Dean (who built Pratts AOD). $800 and a few days later, its back in the car, and Aaron is back in Switzerland.

This brings us to now. We sent Aaron some datalogs and in return, he sent us a modified tune. I am hoping it stops raining so we can get out and do some testing tonight.

The main issue: It seems like the accel fuel needs some adjustment since the car no longer slings to 6K when it hits boost. We are hoping the fuel map is ok, but since the car is loaded way different now we don't know for sure.

Regardless, the drive ability has SIGNIFICANTLY improved with this converter. WAY more responsive leaving stop signs and cruising. I can cruise at 1,600 rpms around town now!

Oh, lastly, in addition to the hydroboost, we added the 13" cobra brakes up front. WOW, what a difference it is having brakes now!

That's it for now. The plan is once the tune is sorted to get it up on the trans brake and put the converter through its paces.

thanks, and sorry again for the lack of updates!
    Shaun

    Back from the dead!
Ok, so we had a few “issues” with the motor. The pistons in the motor were the old discontinued Probe inline/TW dual valve relief pistons and they just weren’t up to the task…5 of them ended up letting go on the first dyno pull. For what it’s worth, the car did manage to put down almost 800 ft-lbs at 3,500 RPM’s on 8psi before it went boom! In hind sight, we should have known something wasn’t right when the catch can started filling up with more and more oil in the weeks leading up to the dyno. We should have yanked the heads and checked it out before the dyno. Oh well, we knew this budget shortblock was going to have to upgraded sooner or later.
So, we decided to part the car out. Anyone need a SBF ITB intake?

JK! Actually, we decided to take this thing to the next level! Right now DiSomma Racing Engines is building us a wicked new short block containing the following:
    - Dart Iron Eagle block
    - Callies Magnum crank
    - Oliver billet rods
    - Super secret custom Don Bailey spec’d Diamond pistons
    - O-ringed block/heads and copper head gaskets

This motor will have around 10.3:1 compression and the same Don Bailey cam. If that wasn’t enough, we decided to it was time for a turbo upgrade. The mighty DCB has a pair of Precision 7675 CEA turbos headed our way!

We are hoping the shortblock and turbos show up next week so we can start getting the car back together. More updates to come once the parts start showing up!

    Thanks,
    Shaun
