Well, the turbo valiant has sat around long enough. Time to get the trans fixed up. This is going to go one of two ways since I don't have the money for a high dollar trans. Either I am going to pull another 904 from the junkyard, slide it in and hope for the best, or take the small block 727 that I rebuilt, buy a new converter and put that in. The 727 was unknown condition when I got it. I replaced the clutches, steels and installed a shift kit. My question is if I swap to the 727 what all needs to be changed. Driveshaft length Im sure but I thought I heard something about 727 yokes taking a larger u joint as well.

Also the car still has the 7 1/4 rear so that will need to be dealt with. But that will be later. I just want to get it on the road for now. The thing I want to avoid is getting a new driveline setup for the 7 1/4 727 combo then having to change it if I swap in an 8 1/4 or something.

    Suggestions?

There is nothing wrong with the 904, get another. No messing around with changing the trans crossmember or mount or driveshaft.

The 904 will last longer then the 7.25 rear end will... lol. You are correct that the drive shaft lengths are different. The yoke's are also different on the driveshafts.

I would say that it'd be best to save your pennies and do the 8 3/4" and 727 swap at the same time. The 904 may work in the long run too, just depends on how much power you're trying to make with this thing.

I've you're capable of building the trans, just spend the money on new parts (clutches and steels, and seal kit) for the 904 you have, forget the mystery junk yard 904.

yup, just put a 904 in until you're doing the rear, no sense building out a driveline for the 727/7.25 combo.

Depending on your neck of the woods, you may actually get $50 for the 7.25 when you ditch it, they are popular for garden tractor pullers.

Sounds like the consensus is a 904. Sounds like a plan. Just on a whim I stopped by a trans shop to see what they would charge to pull the trans, rebuild and reinstall since I cant do any heavy lifting at the moment. I asked about a stock rebuild, nothing special. I was thinking $500 with and would've considered up to $700. The guy quoted me $1300!!!! That is pure madness.

BTW what is a garden tractor?

Dang, that's high. I paid $900 for my C6 to get rebuilt, R&R'd in my '76 F150 4x4 a couple years ago, and that had a transfer case to deal with!!! $1300 seems way high.

That is WAY high, they thought they had a sucker.

Garden tractor = the bigger riding lawn mowers. They do tractor pulling with those little tractors.
