I'm getting ready to do a swap in a 79 Malibu that I'm going to use a factory type harness on to control the engine and trans (L31, 4l80e, car intake, truck accessories, S475 turbo) I'm not going run mass air on it, and from what I have read the air inlet temp sensor is in the mass air meter, so what do I do??

I think it depends on the year. You can remove Mass Air on all but I think the AIT sensors can be located in different locs/diff models and years. If yours was in the MAS housing just buy a GM sensor and find a location to mount it.

If your MAF connector it has 5 wires and includes the IAT sensor. Purchase an earlier seperate IAT sensor and rewire. When the calibrate the computer for Speed Density it will through a MAF code however you can turn the MIL off.

Easy enough to relocate the IAT and get it out of the sensor. Most truck and LS6 MAF have the IAT in the unit and like stated will be a 5 wire sensor. On an SD tune you have to enter the MAf fail frequency to 0 and you will always have a trouble code. The light can be switched off at least and you also have to enter new parameters that fit your 2 or 3 bar sensor.

If your truck harness uses red/green connectors do yourself a favor and make sure to use the 0411 PCM if it doesnt have it currently. Way better PCM that allows RTT with HP Tuners. The traditional (but different wiring pinouts) blue/green connector truck computer is just as good but no Real Time Tuning ability that you get for free when buying the 100 bucks worth of SD patch program.

What about a map sensor, I have heard of people using the cobalt turbo unit, because they are two bars but what if I decide to run more than 15 lbs? I don't think those motors like alot of timing so would the two bar be enough? Or should I go with the larger old school three bar unit and rewire the plug?

    What do you guys think?

First you have to know what the PCM you decide to use is good for with the HP Tuners SD conversion. Some, like the 06 GTO PCM only support 2 bar but the 0411 camaro/truck PCM will support a 3 bar. You can either rewire it to use an old school 3 bar syclone map or use the duramax 3.3 bar. Its fairly cheap to buy one off Ebay. The 0411 will support the 3.3 bar and when the time comes to flash the tune, your gonna need to be walked thru it the first time. Its kind of a bitch entering the map linear parameters and getting a base setup but once you learn it, it works awesome with perfect tunability.

So the duramax map sensor is a 3.3 bar? That should fit in the stock location shouldnt it? I am going to use the 0411 computer.

Yes 3.3 bar and it looks identical to the original tiny square 1 bar sensor. The wiring even plugged right in although i might have gotten lucky.
