Where on the holster for that Luger is the serial? I am pretty certain mine has none but it is original to my Luger.

The serial is written on the back of the holster. My grandfather brought that one back himself. He told my dad that it was on there when he took it from the original owner. With whom he killed.

The P38 was the same scenario. My uncle, the son of the same grandfather, was in WWII. He brought the p38 back. He actually brought 2 of them back. My brother has the other one.
Both of the lugers in my possession are in the exact same condition as when they came back. Have sat untouched in my dads safe since they were given to him 50 years ago.

Thanks, I will have to check the next time I am in the safe. What did he do to keep the leather in same condition as he got it in? My grandfather got mine when he captured a group of Nazis single handedly towards the end or WWII, wish i could get a copy of the news story about that. Their leader surrendered the pistol to him. Mine is an artillery Luger and the officer also fought in WWI where he was issued the Luger. I never have shot the thing but know my mom did a number of times. My grandfather actually used it to hunt and kill a deer while still stationed in Germany just after the war.

I actually been considering getting my holster restored/rebuilt. Hurts the value but not like this is the sort of thing most people sell so who cares about value.

Actually from what I have read and been told, the holster is pretty valuable itself. I would leave it alone if it were me. Nothing has ever been done to the leather to my knowledge.

The serial is written on the back of mine by hand. Dad said it was on there when he got it however many years ago.
The story that goes along with yours is really interesting. I will try to find out more on the ones that I have to see if there is any history behind them.

So you plan on selling a piece of your families history? If not then why do you care about it's value? The value to me is meaningless because I'd never sell it. Leather over time will rot if not treated and/or stored in proper methods. Check out an old car with leather interior that someone let sit for say a year or so without touching it, you will find that the leather is actually being eaten up.

I have a 1938 ;;mossberg and a 1934 national mechanically amplified guitar. Both are family pieces. I was curious of the value and gathered some info a while back but have NO intentions to ever sell them. They'll hang out with other items from my grandfather like his epic zebco 33 from back in the day.;-)

I was actually going to get the value of my Luger done and more so concerned with it ever was destroyed or stolen for insurance purposes. Place here in town offers an appraisal service specifically for old Lugers. I stopped by there one day without the gun but to find out more information and they were complete jerks to myself and wife. Pissed me off so never looked back, I actually was interested in buying a Benelli they happened to actually have in stock so they also lost out on a $1300 sale that day. I was going to leave the Luger alone but my dad made an interesting point last time he was in the country about how why let it rot away in the safe and if never going to sell it then why not have things restored.

I did compare offered Lugers online at one time and I think the value of this one is around $5k. The Artillery Lugers fetch more money due to added rarity and that estimated cost includes the holster, the stock(piece of wood that you can attach to the back of the pistol to turn it into a "rifle"), the magazine, and the holster. But that estimate is based on what people want to sell theirs for, no telling what they actually manage to sell them for but I bet it is less than what they want.

I have zero interest in selling any guns. Only reason I wanted to know value was for insurance reasons and mainly for my own curiosity. I know leather will deteriorate over time. somehow this one has lasted. I could have very well been treated at some point but I don't know of when it would have happened. I will ask my dad if he ever did it.

I think humidity might play a big part in the deterioration process, I believe it is some sort of mold that actually feeds off the leather. Humidity down here is a huge issue but might very well not be near the issue in your location. With that said the leather on mine is pretty decent, it is missing some straps and couple things are worn from the real world use it saw. Until I exchanged emails with someone who restores these I had no idea somethings were even missing.

One of these days I will shoot mine. I'd prefer to take it to someone who knows them well to go through it first. To the best of my knowledge mine has never been cleaned the entire time my family has had it so since at least 1945. My mom used to shoot it quite often though, to this day she will say that it is her favorite pistol to shoot. She says it fits her hand perfectly and it is almost like whatever she'd be pointing her finger at, she is going to shoot that.

My brother has a s&w 40 and while it is a nice piece I think its a bit too large for me to ever carry. I will let you know my thoughts when I get it the transfer. There are others on this site with the sr9c if you read back several pages.

I haven't ever actually shot a SR9C, but I tried to buy one before all my shit started several months ago. I really like the feel of that pistol. Very comfortable in my hands. Let us know what you think.
