Your friend is a fucking idiot. Sorry, but that is poor advice and a essential tool for tuning. Its a few hundred worst case senerio and tells you exactly whats going on with your motor's Air fuel mixture as it goes through its paces with boost. If you want the most you can get with your motor and have it live, I'd invest in one. The conciqences of not having one if something goes wrong can be FAR more expensive than the little you'd spend buying one and KNOWING what is happening. Can't ask for help if you can't tell us whats wrong if its being a bitch tuning ya know? Anything that is fuel requirement on built and boosted motors IS A MUST TO KNOW in order to tune and work with them especially the fuel. Thats one of the most important factors if the motor lives or not so wouldn't you want to monitor that? Just my .02 cents

Okay done see that you did the right thing and ordered a wideband. Just for future references don't listen to tuning advice from your current friends on your turbo car or you'll be needing a new engine. Good luck with your turbo build. :2thumbs:

very wise choice. Thats first thing I put on even before it was tuned, and it saved my ass , because shortly after the tune (maybe 6 passes or so) I started losing fuel pressure and was alerted by watching the wideband...worth every penny.

unless said friends have built or at least own stronger cars than me I tend to ignore what they think I should do with my car.

Its a great idea while tuning. Realisticly can you watch it while racing, of course we all say yes :)
A warning(light, boost cut, etc..)Rears is a far more effective way

I had a wideband before I went turbo. I'd say it's essential to have if you are tuning period.

I agree with warning lights, they are much more likely to catch your attention if you are pushing it hard and looking anywhere except the gauge(like out the windshield...)

Is there a way to tie the wide band into the ignition to cut the spark if it leaves your set parameters? That way if the motor starts going to lean it could save itself.

Not without some form of processor which is also tied into your throttle sensor and you MAP or MAF sensor so it knows when you are in boost etc... otherwise cruising and part throttle it would always cut ignition because the engine runs close to stoich there

Ive been wondering myself how much you can really watch the wideband while racing. I think I'm going to go with a digital readout to make it easier, but watching videos online it still seems hard to keep an eye on it. Do you guys really get a good look at it besides when your tuning?

once i broke the 450hp mark on the street watching the wideband was impossible and it became my passengers job. at the track i find im only ever looking straight ahead. i agree warning lights are better due to the fact you can focus on the road/track

The AltronicsO2 Alert has a 12 volt warning output . You can set the warning AFR and an RPM that it has to be at in order to trigger it .

The RPM feature is nice because you can set the AFR warning lower like 13:1 . And the RPM to , lets say 5000rpm . Because we all know you will see AFRs in the 13s all the time , but should not see them there above 5000 .

You can use it for a warning light , rev limiter , engine cut off ......... what ever .

I use this gauge with it .
