So i've been doing a bunch of reading, and if I can build it myself, then that's what I prefer to do.
What I'm considering is building a box, say 12x12x4", welding several dozen 1/2" crosstubes through it, capping the ends, and basically building my own "core". Put "core" inside of a second box, filled wth water and run to an external resevoir with a high flow, low pressure pump to circulate it, and for when it's really hot, filling the resevoir with ice. I see the custom built heat exchangers being built with intercooler cores, and I know te surface area won't be nearly as big as my plan, so the heatdissipation would be lesser, but anything is better than no intercooler at all, and can keep the plumbing to a minimum, and better fit my particular situation(as in I have little to no room)

    You've got the right idea...

Most people shy away from the AWIC for the simple fact that its messy and complicated to plumb... but if space is a premium then go for it!

yeah, don't make your own out of tubing in a tank. You will be disappointed. Tubing in a tank is an extremely poor heat exchanger, it would need to be unreasonably large to even approach what a "proper" A/W intercooler can do. And the tubing will end up costing you more than the cheap A/Ws that are available today.
Five to ten years ago making your own out of Air-Air cores pirated off stock intercoolers could save some cash because the available A/Ws were $800+.. but now they are cheap.

The chinese air to water intercooler is a really stout setup. I have sold 100s of them mostly to jet skit guys and one customer in particular I would always ask how it was doing as I saw him regularly. It has lasted 3+ years on a jetski that saw salt water.
