    * At 1350 hp, this is the fastest, most powerful engine Mercury Racing has ever introduced

    * Turbo-compressor induction delivers a punch from hole shot to peak rev range, while pulse-timed exhaust tuning keeps turbos spooled, eliminating lag altogether

    * Monster, mesa-shaped torque curve ensures unwavering power through entirety of run time by controlling boost and regulating torque at high engine outputs

    * Quad cam, four-valve, port fuel injection, and dry-sump efficiency deliver massive amounts of power with 9-liter displacement, matching high-performance marine propulsion with luxury-car-like driveability

    * 6500 RPM red line adrenalizes boat and boater alike

Gees, strip those Mercury engineers of their degrees now! Everyone knows you can't make power on 7.8:1 comp....

For Real? Isn't the engine turboed?

Can someone explain what this means. What is pulse timed exhaust tuning ?

Yeah I scratched my head at that too. To me it sounds like marketing speak for "it is turbocharged and has equal-length headers"
I believe the pulse timed exhaust tuning just means that the exhaust pulses from each bank arrive at the collector in even intervals - so the turbine sees a consistent pressure pattern, not a big spike if 3 or 4 pulses hit simultaneously. This means equal length headers, and if they really want to get fancy, crossover headers so the exhaust strokes of the cylinders feeding the headers are evenly timed.

Ignorant here. Is the engine a clean sheet Mercury Marine only design?

    Quite an impressive machine.

Probably means that the turbos have divided housings, and they take advantage of it.

I'd bet they did it since they warranty it and dont want to have to worry if someone puts in some bad 93, or too low of octane.

If you look at this link you will see how the exhaust 'headers are designed to have even firing pulses to the split scroll turbos:

    http://www.mercuryracing.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/1100-Model-Shot.jpg

If you assume that the engine is like a BB Chebby in numbering of cylinders (left side = 1,3,5,7), then you can see in the photo that cylinder #1 and #5 are connected in the exhaust manifold and cylinder #3 and #7 are connected in the exhaust manifold.

The shiny silver manifold is a "Tri-Y" header feeding the turbo on the left side. you can see the two passages going up to the turbo. The turbo IS a split scroll turbo.

I doubt weather their statement of "eleminating lag all together" is totally correct if all the're doing is making a good split pulse system. You may not feel the lag in a boat but it would be there..... unless their turbo is tiny.

The gentleman that assembles all of these motors at MercuryRacing is a friend of the shop. The technology in these things is so amazing, but that's what you get when you pay 200k for an engine. I think the coolest part of the system is that they are so reliable. Most of the engines that come out of the shop are scheduled to be freshened every 100-125 hours. That doesn't seem too bad except when the base price for a freshen is $22,500 just for the minimum service...Evan

Sorry but I completely forgot I posted in here. Anyways, I got the entire info for you today...

Everything in this picture and machine work is included for the minimum freshen package. Most guys are selling both their engines and buying new because it's more efficient. I was told today, at a rate of assembling two of these 1350s per week, they are booked solid until August...
