Balancing a turbo as a unit or core balanceing is safer because when you bolt the compressor wheel on, the shaft bends at the faces and you don't know how much so it is a gamble to send it out not core balanced. I have been caught before.

lol Yep im a shorty fatty.

    quote from Precision:

We balance our turbochargers on a component level. For any given turbocharger size, our balance tolerance is 1/2 of the unbalance allowed by OE specs. In order for component level balancing to work in an assembly, all machining tolerances have to be tight. Specs on perpendicularity and runout are a lot more crucial when component balancing. If the tolerances are with in spec, the turbo is balanced, such is the case with our turbos.
Some companies balance turbos as an assembly to keep the cost down. Balancing as an assembly makes up for parts with loose tolerances that cost less to make. You can build a turbo with parts that may be bent or not exact and then balance it as an assembly after the fact. It may be balanced, although there is shaft runout. We have repaired turbochargers that have been VSR balanced and have found that a VSR (vibration sorting rig) balanced turbocharger can have a shaft that is bent over 0.01" and still be "balanced" when it leaves the factory.
We take the approach of manufacturing exact parts and balancing them correctly from the start so whatever combination we build is dead nuts. Even our NHRA Pro Mod spec turbochargers are balanced on a component level. Assembly level balancing would verify we did our job correctly but in 24 years has not been necessary. I hope this clears things up for you.
