A guy that worked for me about five years ago his son got into this and the kid was making big bucks the last i heard, and was seeing the world. He used to send us some videos of some of the stuff they were doing and it was amazing. He only worked like 6 months out of the year and made like 200 K a year.

yea everyone i've ever talked to about it said the people they know that do it make over 100k plus and it just seems as though you just have to be crazy enough to do it. i wouldn't mind traveling either since my fiance has been talking about possibly doing the traveling nurse thing (they make a SHIT TON of money as well). i'm trying to weigh all my options before i make a big change. i've already signed up for the welding classes at my local college and am looking into the diving classes the nearby university offers. i've been welding since i was fourteen and i think this would be an awesome career. i can't say i'm in love with turning wrenches any more and in all reality this career i've fell in has left a sour taste in my mouth to say the least. basically i'm tired of working on other people's piece of shit cars, tired of crawling under their dashes because they treat their vehicles like dumpsters, tired of hearing customers bitch about their 250 dollar bill but they don't mind paying 60,000 dollars ticket price for the car, tired of working on big equipment on my fucking back when that's definitly not what i signed up for. sorry, sounds like i'm bitchin alot but i'm just not happy doin what i'm doin. this would be an AWESOME change of pace. get to see the world, get fuckin PAID, work 3 days a week for 6 months and either kick back or start a little side hustle.

What's so bad about it ? We talking about were of the wildlife ? First thing that comes to my mind is just electricity under water. Just seems like a basic no-no haha.

i ain't skerd lol. basically my understanding is you get paid so much because its probably one of the most dangerous professions you can think of, water+electricity+sharks+decompression+undercurrents= money :noidea:

Only draw back it is a short lived career most divers only get to dive about 12 years before they can't dive any more , it takes a big toll on the body after a few years.

10sec thats one reason they only dive 6 months out of a year, you can only dive so many hours a day / week / month.

Ahhh, depth and decompression never even crossed my mind. I was thinking simple shit. Like hull welding while in dock.

Try welding in zero visibility, with a ton of gear, and a SUPER strong current trying to rip you away.

The pay is not enough for most of the guys I have talked to. They do/did it, but it was not enjoyable at all.

Most of you seem to forget that you can get jobs doing this type of work in more shallow waters too. My mom's cousin did this for a living for many years. But he never did the stuff in the ocean. He worked mostly in the USA working on dams and bridges. He also did some underwater welding pipework for a nuclear power plant (before it was online) in Clinton IL.

Once you learn the welding and diving there are plenty of other opportunities as well. If you get bored doing the welding you can always just do general work under water. I'm working with some divers on a job right now and they have it pretty easy. If they even touch the water they get paid for 8 hrs at a double time rate :chacha:- and thats not even welding. I have heard that they do make a shit ton of money and only work half the year. stick with it and good luck :2thumbs:

Yea bridge welding interests me as well. I hear they get paid pretty good mainly because of the hazard of having to weld suspended with a harness.

I'm thinking with the oil leak going on in the Gulf there will be new requirements and mandated updates needed for drilling rigs, possibly creating alot of work in this field. :welder:
