I have been beating my head against a wall all weekend long trying to fit a 6" long airfilter into my single turbo kit. I have decided to take a step back and try to determine if I even need a filter this big or do I even need a larger filter then what I am trying to use?

    Specs:
    302/331 forged motor
    TW Heads
    5-Speed TKO
    Good Fuel System

    76mm Turbo, .96a/r

Car is daily driven shooting for 500-600rwhp with the good motor, hoping to stay around 12-15lbs of boost at most.

The first filter is this k&n that came on the kit from brand x
Second is this S&B filter that is much larger but doesn't fit very well:
Universal Filter (Cleanable, 8-ply Cotton, Blue Oil):
    Flange ID 4,
    Top OD 5.25,
    Element Height 5,
Top Style: Chrome Rim w/ Power Stack

I think this third one will fit perfect but is it overkill?

I also talked to precision turbo on the phone today and the gentleman informed me that mounting the filter on the housing itself could cause the filter to collapse and get sucked into the turbo? My other car has never had a problem, but now I'm a bit nervous has anyone seen this happen before? I could understand on a larger turbo running tons of boost but not a street car.

The only reason a filter would collapse is because it's too small and the restriction makes enough vacuum collapse it. That looks like a pretty big filter, so I wouldn't worry about it.

What happens when it rains with the filter like that?

I would think that it would have to suck in less water then a fender mounted CAI.

Less water...I would'nt think any water would be good.

People spray water into turbos all the time. Rain won't hurt it, driving through a flood and completely submerging the inlet will.

Water there shouldn't be an issue...

As far as filters - you might want to checkout the import scene - they have a lot of innovative stuff - http://www.blitz-uk.co.uk/Product-20.aspx etc....

Those foam filters that they use on the 93-98 supra turbos are the smallest filters I've ever seen - some people say they deteriorate over time though... I forgot which company makes those foam filters...

    Good luck!
