Hey guys, I am trying to make a set of custom log headers I am wondering what is the thinnest steel I can go with that won't melt. Could I use those small like 1-1/2" connector tubes you find in the exhaust section at a parts store for the primaries?

Need more info. Engine specs, mods, power levels, and any other relevant data. Most people use 1 5/8" min. What heads? What flange?

Well im not worried so much about efficiency or what kind of power I will make with them as my budget and skills as limited. I really just wanna know what is the lightest steel I can use that won't melt.

But in any case the mods are stock 93 block, tfs intake and cam, gt40p heads. The turbo is an hx50 looking to make around 15-18psi. The flange is just a stock flange off an explored with the pipes cut off. I am going to just be doing a basic log setup, short tubes to a 2-1/2" pipe.

Ok. Have you thought about doing a stepped log? I believe most people use 16 guage MS.

You could use 18 if you wanted, and supported the turbo. It shouldn't melt, but the durability will be less over time.

ok thanks guys, this is just a toy so time isnt an issue, it will rarley be driven. This shouldnt cost me more than 30 bucks so if it doesn't work it was worth a shot.

I would find a set of stock 5.0 headers and run em.

unfortunately they wont work on my gt40p heads. I already had my stock headers welded up and had the hot side completed but after all the hammering to make the spark plug angle work the headers dont line up with the head anymore and instead of going through anymore hassle I am going to scrap them. You really thing the stock headers will flow better than a cheap log setup?

Stock headers are what, 1.5"? That is MORE than big enough to break any stock 302 block in half. I believe someone on this site made about 1100rwhp through 1 5/8" headers, so think about that.

well the pipe i was planning on using was 1.5".....maybe at the flange it is 1.5" but the stock headers crimp real bad in certain areas. Either way they wont work with my head setup/
