so i installed an 8 point cage in my car about 6 months ago and like in idiot didnt prime it or anything so it has started to surface rust pretty badly. i dont want it to start pitting so i am trying to figure out what the best way to remove it would be. i have a grinder with a wire wheel that i could use. or should i go with a rust remover product, or maybe muriatic acid- Thanks Nick

Use a wire wheel and knock any scale off. Then spray jasco metal etch or Ospho on it. You can get them at a lot of auto parts stores or paint supply stores. As well as Ace Hardware. Let stand for about 10 minutes and wipe off. The Jasco/Ospho has a diluted acid in it and neutralizes the remaining rust.

I used muriatic acid to wipe the rust off of my cage before I painted it. Worked great and was pretty fast compaired to using a wire wheel. Just remember to use a respirator!

if it is mild surface rust just use fine steel wool and wipe with thinner rag then primer till paint. If it is pitted remove the loose and clean with thinner then Por 15. The POR 15 works great but needs a rough surface to attach to so need to scuff up with some 120.

For me using a wire wheel has worked best/fastest. I tried Ospho and it did neutralize the rust but I still had to wire-wheel it afterwords. You can also try using a long sand-paper roll (usually 2" wide, 80-grit) and cutting it around 3'. Just wrap it around the pipe and pull down on each end, that also worked pretty good. :)

    good luck

I used red scotch brite and 320 on my cage. Then hosed it down with dp90 before painting it.

A lot of people think that primer out of a can will stop rust. It won't. It can't seal the metal like two part primers or paint. Paint in the can is porous after being sprayed.

If possible always use an etching primer on bare metal before applying paint . The etching primer just needs to be applied lightly.
