Do I need to do anything special if I want to TIG weld on a chrome plated oil pan? Do I need to grind the chrome off or just go for it? I am attempting to weld in some stainless AN fittings for my oil return. :2thumbs:

    Thanks.

I would clean it to the steel myself , the primary coating in the chroming process is copper on most automotive parts might contaminate the weld. JMO.

if your going to use stainless fittings, you'll want to use stainless filler rod also

Yes, grind all the chrome off down to bare metal. Then you can tig the SS fitting to the steel pan. You do need to use 309 SS filler rod though, it's for dissimilar metals, ;)

If the oil pan is just regular steel (which it probably is since it's chromed) then use mild steel fittings and fill rod.
