Hey guys, I hope this is the correct place to post this question

I am looking at a 02 mustang to buy, & I jumped it off & got it running, but the dealer (it was a trade in at the chevy dealer) said that its supposed to have a blown head gasget

What I need to know is, how common is it for the to bend valve train when the head gasket blows ???
And is it a in block cam engine being an 02 ???

Im just trying to figure out if its worth buying or not & how much I should offer them
Its a auto trans & been wrecked before, but pulled out fairly well, but the paint sucks & its had some mice chewing on the inside for a while

    Thanks, Matt

the 3.9 is a very strong engine. you shouldnt have to worry about anything being shot with the blown gasket. unless the owner drove it a long time after. your probally want to get the heads checked for any warpage.but it usually doesnt need to be done. And yes it has a single cam in the block.

2002 mustang v6's are a 3.8 not a 3.9. And they came from the factory with MLS headgaskets, It is pretty hard to blow a mls gasket, tho I had one overheated so bad it would push wate, but gasket was fine. The 96 and newer are prone to intake gasket failure, it is a plastic O-ring design that fail and puke antifreeze into the oil and into the corner cylinders and looking like head gasket failure.

it's a 3.8L v6 dual port head motor, 190hp, not bad motors, in 2004 I believe they decided to call them 3.9, :stupid:

depends on how bent up the body is whether or not its a good deal.

see if they will take 15-1800 since the drivetrain is wirth that much once fixed and running properly. Check the cylinder compression before tearing it down so you knkow where to start looking. Anything under 110 is a starting point area to look at. Get the heads checked at a GOOD machine shop that knows what they are doing and has a reputation for doing work right. Ask at the local dragstrip or circle track where to go and dont be a cheapskate on getting one fixed. If they know someone who does race heads SPECIFICALLY, give them a call and talk to them about doing the work.

04 the said some of them were 3.9's cause they phased out the 3.8 and finished up with the 3.9's out of the feestar's. my g/f's 04 auto car made 337/363 on 10lbs. good foundation to start for a nice sleeper
