can you get by with a smaller cooler with a carb over e.f.i Im wanting to make 700 to 800 hp with a carb can i run a 500 hp intercooler or would that be to small this is going in a vette so thangs are tight

You can go without an intercooler. Also the key is how much air the intercooler will move. If it will only support enough air to make 500hp then that is about all your going to make. The ability to cool is important yes, but air flow is also. You don't want it to be a restriciton.

Tim, John Meany one time tested a BB Chevy with twin Vortech "J-Trim" superchargers, (One of the CARS Guys). He had a custom 4 brick intercooler he had made somewhere. It had a FIVE PSI pressure drop across the thing with 20 psi of boost going into the engine.

We took off the Intercooler and the engine picked up power!

Another example of your point about making sure the intercooler actually works.

How do the procharger intercooler stack up. I have a 1300hp A2A that I'm mocking up now.

At one time, Shelby-Spearco made some of the best Inter-cooler cores.
Shelby-Spearco is now owned by Turbonetics.

I have not personally used any of the Procharger inter-coolers on any of my projects.

A memeber on this board, had his car non-intercooled and made 1050 or something like that on the dyno. The next year after some engine updates, he added an A2A and it made 900 hp. It must move the air or it does not matter how cold it makes the air.

So what method would the hobbyist, a.k.a. the garage home mechanic, use to measure pressure drop?

This may be where that extra 7 to 8 MPH lies. Not to mention I could play with 200 lbs. less being non-intercooled.

Yes, would be nice to know pressure before and after the cooler.

you could weld a fitting in before and after the intercooler and measure the pressure difference when your on the dyno, with a simple vac/boost gauge.

If someone were to run without an intercooler would they run into pre-detonation issues in hot summer heat?
I know there has to be a calculation some place for it, i'm just failing to find it.

95 degree atmospheric temp wtih a car running 91 octane, 9-1 compression, blow through using a T70 turbo running 10psi.

Meth injection might be the answer ...... pretty cheap insurance.

tim when we have checked the inter coolers before we never seen a drop with yours or the large procharger like i use?I could be wrong maybe you remember somthing i don't.I have tested some very bad ones like 5 psi drop at 15psi of boost and over 10 at 20 psi of boost

We have not seen a pressure drop. The one I was talking about was when the customer added a Air to Air cooler.

I have a similar setup and have had no problems with this in the Alabama heat yet. 9.21 iron headed SBC TV81/71 turbo blow thru. Been up to 15psi with no problems 38º total timing locked out box pulling 1.2º per lb boost.

I agree have never seen a good A2A on a race aplication I would run non intercooled then.

FYI I am running an 'ebay' horizontal flow 24x12x3 A/A cooler and at 7psi intake manifold I am at 10psi compressor outlet. 'upgrading' to a 24x12x4 ebay cooler with some baffling in the end tank to redirect flow, not expecting too much but the internal flow area is approx 20% more. IMO anything A/A that will support decent HP has to have vertical flow and be rather large :D

i had a 383 with a procharger and when i took my intercooler off it picked up alot. psi reading wiith the intercooler at carb was 12lbs with out it was 15lbs. my core was 25x15x3. it did come off a diesel truck so i know it wasn't very good.

thats a huge bump in power!
Sounds like any A2A worht installing has to be huge and flow very well !!
The only "cooler" I will use with this setup will be meth injection and that'll come later when I push the limits of my setup.

I was really aware of the pressure drops guys were getting going thru air to air intercoolers.. That's why I fabbed up my intercooler from "two" XO2 Racing intercoolers.. I cut off the end tanks, welded the cores together, and then fabbed up new end tanks..

XO2 says that each of these intercoolers is good for 700 hp with a .2 psi pressure drop at 15 psi.. I decided to run an air to air for it's lack of any kind of hassle.. And I thought that running fuel injection that I needed some kind of cooler, to keep those 300 degree IAT's down..

I'm going to guess that you can get a little more aggressive with your timing with some kind of cooler knocking the temps down.. How much I don't know..
