Wonder how much power this screw up was costing me ?

Maybe they were looking to limit power..kind of like putting a restricter in the inducer.

you would think it would cause a Backpressure issue however. Its kinda funny how a couple of housings have had the same thing show up. Theres obviously a reason for it being there. its slightly possible it fell in the housing before the turbo was bolted up but Im 99% more possible that it was put there.

Is that a production turbo at all? Between the two threads, that's no coincidence.

Can't say for sure how it got in mine, but I seriously doubt it was intentional, because those clowns at Forced Fab who built it were trying to break into the mustang turbo market and were really hoping that I would be posting some big numbers to boost their business.

Yeah, what I'm saying is I doubt the shop did it. Just saying if they sourced the hotside it could have been something that was overlooked, whether at a production QA or something of the like. Main thing is you found what seems to be a reoccuring (2 incidents that we know of) problem that may help a few others out as well. :2thumbs:

The shop that installed the kit, fabricated all the hot and cold side components including the headers. Since this is in a 93 Thunderbird SC with a V8 swap..everything was custom built to fit this car. The turbo came from Precision and wasn't even used during the initial mock-up...because precision loaned them an empty turbo (no shaft or wheels) for that purpose. I have always been a little dissapointed in how slowly the turbo spooled, but since this was my first turbo car I didn't really have anything to compare it to, and assumed my converter was just stalled too low. My dyno chart looked more like a centrifical blower than most of the turbo charged motors I've seen posted here, and the car has always been a real dog coming off the line.

I'm real happy to have finally resolved the slow spooling issue and I'm very anxious to see what it does on the dyno and track now. While it's a blast to drive with .81 AR housing and zero lag in pretty much any gear, I may need to put the .96 housing back on just to keep from blowing the tires off everytime I press on the gas pedal a little too hard. Then again driving this thing is more fun than I've had in years, so I might just keep it like this.

Try the "unplugged" .96 housing and then choose your favorite. You won't have a problems selling whichever one you don't use.

It's a small world after all.... I have a 07 STI with a 35r on it that I work on. The turbo has been on for a few months and started getting about 500rpms late coming up and using less fuel to maintain correct AFRs. I pulled the turbo yesterday after seeing this thread thinking that my customer had gotten a little to happy with his anti-lag. So I am looking at the turbine wheel and it's all good than I glance down at the turbine housing and see a reflection of the picture you posted looking back at me. I don't know where it came from but there was a piece of pipe jammed up in the scroll.

    It was worth a laugh...

    Thanks.

Yeah it's sure odd.. I know that after the first thread posted last yr when I got my turbo in I pulled the exhaust housing just to look and see if I had a little surprise waiting for me.

What turbo's are these that are having issues? Are they all the same brand, or different? Good catch, keep us informed.

Edit* This isn't something that could have come off the flex joint would it? I saw a thread on here that showed the cheap lex joints coming apart... I imagine the pieces you guys are pulling out of the scroll's are about 14/16 guage?

I did some searches on pictures of the flex pipes here and found this thread https://www.theturboforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=96379.0 RTZ took the flex pipe insides out and look at his pictures, part of a band that is just about the right size comes out of the flex pipe. Looks like you could be on to something with it being the flex pipes.

I didn't have a flex joint in mine, but I have heard of them failing.
