Frank is right. i'm using the MSD 6010 to control the coils. according to some info i've read my 317 aluminum factory heads flow around 250cfm. thats TW head territory and i paid less for the complete 364 cid motor than i would have paid for the TW heads alone. not to mention the short block will easily handle more than a stock 302 HO any day. the reasons i bought this motor are mostly what you mentioned. I should be able to put this car easily in the 9's with a $1K engine, ofcoarse my 302 was a $1k engine that got me into the 10.40's so we'll see . The Fairmont Parish8 built is a testiment to the durability of these 6 bolt main monsters. and he paid pennies for his 5.3

The only short block question I forgot to ask was about the factory rods in these LS 5.7L truck blocks. Wondering if they will survive to 1000 flywheel hp. (That's my HP target range for a reliable turbo powered motor.)

So still wondering how long a stock LS short block will last. I may do rings and bearings, & a hand honing freshening before installing the motor in my car. I know the T6 S400 will very easily & efficiently push her to 1000hp by about 20lbs of boost on race gas.

With only upgrading fuel injectors to 83lbr's, the Z06 cam, and maybe a new high perf plastic manifold, Mega Squirt, and Borg Warner S400 T6 or TT MPT70's, I am betting this motor will easily make 1000 flywheel hp.

Wow to make 1000hp reliably, sounds like the only short block upgrade part needed may be H beam rods at the most!

No no... reliably? I wouldnt say there is TRUELY such a thing at 1k hp. If I were trying to build one reliably to 1k hp I would put oliver rods and diamond on manley pistons. Something to that level. But head work, I wouldnt mess with too much. If you need the hood clearance I'd go with a L76 intake manifold and L92 heads. If you have a little more room the GMPP single plane (vic jr style) manifold and elbow are really nice looking.

i agree, there is no such thing as "reliable" with a car making that much power. you can be lucky and it lives, but you really can't call it reliable. but then if you want reliable buy a toyota. if you want scary ass fast continue down your path.

Hey man, it my not be pretty...but it serves the purpose! Besides...its a "DM original"...it may be worth something one day!! HAHA!! I just had a hell of a time getting it to line up (I had jacks, prybars, more prybars...). My car was t-boned back in '95....that may be part of the problem!! I got your message last night... I honestly can't remember exactly what I had called for (I know it had to do with adjusting the valves)....it was probably just to bs with ya! I did re-adjust them with a 1/2 turn of preload versus a 1/4. I plan to put it back together tonight (just have to install the piping from the fender to the tb and tighten down the upper intake). Hopefully she's a bit more quiet now.. Funny how you can hear the valve train over the exhaust from the back of the car in the little vid I did. No way in hell was that possible when it was N/A!! LOL!

i'm not sure i want to put my name on that crossmember . when you get it running you'll have to drive over one saturday and we'll build you a new one. I'm sure being in the garage amplified the noise but it should quiet down with more preload.

Sounds good to me man!! I bought a welder, but my friend is supposed to get the leads for me (part of the deal if I bought the welder). I can't wait to start fab'n up some parts... As far as the noise, I'm sure having the hood off didn't help matters much either...

My buddy is a fulltime welder and told me that if I bought just the welder (its a Miller Maxstar 200..couldn't pass up the deal!!) that he could hook me up with a bottle, leads, etc. So, I'm just waiting for those so I can start screwing around with it...

Yeah man...go tig or go home!! Truthfully, I was just looking for a cheap MIG and my buddy told me that I could get this one for $550...hell, that's whatI'd pay for a MIG! The only catch is that I would have to wait to get the leads.... For that price, I figured what the hell!!

OHH SHIT !

John tore down my old short block to give it a fresh hone and a new set of bearings to begin it's new life in his project. When we noticed one of the rods was in an "S" shape. Another was not far behind. oh well, so much for this ole girl, i bet one more 1/4 mile pass would have done her in. pics to follow
