How much oil pressure should i be seeing out of my 4.6?

    Here is my setup.

    4.6 teskid
diamond flat tops with valve reliefs
    cobra crank
    300m manley rods
    avaid dry sump
    b heads
    hyland dual valvespring setup
    stainless valves
    twin 76mm bb turbos
    air to water
    glide
    9''

Anyhow, when I start the motor cold, it makes 60psi at idle (900-1200) When the coolant reaches 180, I only have 15psi at idle. I rev the motor to 6000 and it makes between 35-38psi. I can adjust the pump and turn the pressure up, but i don't want to hurt anything, I have had low mounted turbo drain back issues, and was worried if i turn up the pressure, it might push oil past the seals. I talked to John @ avaid and he told me to run my turbo drains to a catch can and a scavenge line to the can, along with the can being vented to atmosphere, and it seems to work really well. I also ran .050 restrictors to the turbo supplys and it seems to make a difference. I was wondering if this whole dry sump setup is a waste of time. It is a royal PITA, but my thinking was that it would be worth it to run all the lines, add the extra weight, loose the room under the hood, ect, in exchange for no worries about oiling problems. I am pretty sure the machinist got the bottom end clearances where they should be, we did alot of research on that. Do I need to turn the pressure up on the pump? Ditch the setup? Am I doing something wrong? A little help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    JR

BTW I run valvoline 10w30 full synthetic, maybe i should be running 20w50? I am tired of grenading motors :bang:

I think the acceptible PSI is 10 psi for everything 1000 rpms. So you should logically be at 60 psi at 6000 rpms. Mine idles around 850 fully warmed up and I have 30 PSI of oil pressure and when I take it over 2000 rpms I have around 75psi. Up to 80psi around 6000.

I think the 10 psi per 1000rpm is a pretty good rule of thumb. Is your combo a Modular? What pump are you running.

I think that is a little low. Mine cold pressure is over 100 psi with 5w30 and hot is around 30-35 with idle 900.

Yeah my combo is a 4.6 2v with a stock cobra high volume pump.

finally figured out that the pressure section of my pump in not adequite, so i sent back to aivaid today to have it upgraded. Thank guys, i knew something just wasn't quite right.

You should only use 5w30 unless you have the newer GT heads and revised adjusters.

Yes, that's low. I could care less about the pressure at idle as long as it's above about 10. But to only have 35-38 at 6k is a recipe for a hurt motor.

    I been using 20w 50w for years & it work's fine.<the FORD GT & the GT500 use 20w50syn OEM>
    check your oil pump !
oil press should be 80 @ idle

How do you figure 80psi at idle? Yeah maybe when its cold?

Yeah thats what i thought. Glad I did some investigating before i went to the track. Should have my revised dry sump pum back by mon. I am assuming you are saying to use 5w 30 because of having to pump up 32 lash adjusters shane? That is what i plan on doing. Shane, will you be at world street car challenge here in st. louis?

Yes, but the GT and GT500 have the revised adjusters with different oil feed orifice sizes. So they're designed for it. You may have used 20w50, but that doesn't mean it's correct. Mihovetz tested all different weights on the dyno one week on a 1000+hp 4v. He lost big power when he increased oil viscocity.

    That's cool
My car makes 1001rwhp to the tires <4valve twin 61's> & when I went fron 10w30 to 20w50 did not change anything. :2thumbs:

I believe the Ford GT and GT500 use 5w50 full synthetic, Ford specifically designed the oil for those motors. Also running thicker oil is not going to raise the oil pressure unless the clearances in the engine are to high. I've heard of guys running 20w50 with no probs as long as they are warned up, but I also had a customer(18 yrs old) who had 4 engines in his mustang because he insisted on running 20w50, but never warmed it before beating the hell out of it, it threw a rod on all engines and they were stock, no nos, blowers etc. After I put a used engine in I told him he has to run 5w30 or it will do it again, 4 years later he is still beating the hell out of it.

Got it taken care of guys. I upgraded a couple of thing on the pressure section on the pump, and I ran the pressure guage signal from the back of the drivers side head, to the remote mount filter assembly. Apparently the back of the heads is not a very good place to read pressure from what I have come to find out. I now have 35-40 psi at idle when up to full operating temp and 90-100+ psi at 8000 rpm. Thanks for all of your feedback.
