try www.lowbugget.com. These guys offer turbo kits that fit completely under your deck lid, or full blown drag car applications too!! Ive got one of there 1600t kits, and is totally hidden. check em out

i built one when i was 18 and didnt know much about turbos, its pretty easy and straightforward, i just blew through dual 34 webers with a chrysler t3. for oil return i just returned into the valve cover. i added a inline fuel injection pump. i didnt even have a boost gauge but i should have been making 8psi. to regulate the injection pump i twisted a piece of bailing wire abound the rubber fuel lline and tightened it untill it ddint overcome the floats (i guess i can take credit for a DIY fuel pressure reg). what was the A/F ratio, who knows, had it for 2 years and never had to change rings or pistons. i guess with a 7.5:1 comp ratio just about anythings safe. i grew up in the country and turbos werent mainstream(neither was the internet). embarrassing YES, just something i had to get off my chest

I built a DIY kit for my old vw, used a turbo header (over alt. style) from lowbugget.com, at the time it cost me $180 uncoated. I used a t-3 style turbo from a volvo. A.J. Sims over at low bugget set me up with a draw-thru type carb manifold, and t-center section., and just used my stock end-castings. I used a 2 bbl holley carb, holley red elec fuel pump, also a holley red regulator (blue ones do not allow you to lower your psi enough for your vw motor) I tapped into the top of the regulator with a 1/8 npt thread, used this for boost reference port( as your turbo builds boost, more fuel pressure is allowed to the carb). CB performance makes a fuel pump block off plate that has a 1/2 npt hole in the middle of it, which you can use for the turbos oil drain. Install a "T" fitting behing your oil pressue warrning light sending unit thing, use this to provide oil to your turbo. lock out your distributor and away you go! VW is one of the most easiest things to turbocharge.

Leave the comp. the way it is, just be sure to use a set of copper head gaskets (yes VW's can use a head gasket) It looks more like a copper "O" ring. you can get these rings in multiple sizes to achieve the comp. ratio you want. If you want to get a lil more out of it, you can change the cam out to somethin like a Web 120 grind cam, seems to be the popular choice for a vw turbo motor.

    I had this combo on a 1914cc type 1 vw. :2thumbs:
    Good Luck!

    Andrew,
    Way cool!!!
What boost is it taking to run 10's? What transaxle do you use? Any other details would be great.

ive run as much as 36psi at the track to get it to run its quickest. The transmission is a heavily modified original unit.

i'm pretty sure jeff newcom in redding, builds his transmissions
mine is very similar and i had kevin richards (kcr) in riverside build it

btw, i'm a vw guy too but doing some research for a turbo mustang that i want to build

homemade turbo's are easy to do if you got some welding skills turbo's can be found at a junkyard or used on www.thesamba.com in hiperformance section, carbs can be found there as well and be set up for either blowthrough or drawthrough, webbers or dellortos can be used for that with out taking up too much space and not a whole lot of modifications, in a blow through application they can hold up to 18lbs of boost without seeping too much (assuming carbs are in good condition), lowbugget does sell turbo kits but i cant say that i'm a big fan, all the parts that he sells can be pieced together cheaper by shopping around, if you want to go bigger on the motor and turbo you could always set it up with a draw through holley, andrews motor is setup with a drawthrough 45mm delorto sidedraft. hope this helps

    here's my bucket

I just watched those video's the other day when i was searching the classifieds on the samba :2thumbs:
I plan to do a VW as my next project. I was even thinking about selling the stang to move on to the VW project but i think i'll just wait till i finish the stang and then get a VW to work on.
