If you are an AEM EMS user and you have had the mysterious timing error / misfires problem please PM me your name, car year, and EMS part number along with a short description of the problem.

    Thanks,
    Trent

I talked to Jason S about this at SEMA and he had no answer for the problem.

Is this problem something us future AEM owners (me) should be worried about? I am planning on placing my order next week for one

    Thanks!!

For me it is just an occaisonal stumble that happens at light loads. May happen a few times a cruise..may not happen at all. There does not seem to be any pattern to it. It is not a huge deal but it is an issue. Apparently the earlier frimware versions( pre V1.11) do not have the issues......but then you don't get the features of V1.11..

I got an AEM EMS on my 393 w/ novi 2k and i had a few ignition problems. It wouldnt rev cleanly above 3000rpm and woudl just stumble unless you just floored the shit out of it then it would jump to 4500. Never a smooth transitions between those rpms. Turns out I had to lower the coil dwell factor from 40 to 35 or 30 and it went away.

The next week i had it dynod at 600rwhp with no problems AEM kicks ass

A lot of people had this problem but its fixable with a few adjustments..

I had the exact symptoms that slowstang101 described. I also found that the coil dwell solved my problem.  Too bad I didn't figure that out before spending >$300 on an upgraded ignition and coil thinking it was spark blowout. :bang:

Turns out they had a thread on AEM POWER and actually knew this condition existed, but they kept teilling us " its in the tune" WELL NO FUCKING SHIT DUMBASS im not a computer engineer tell me what to change, thats why im calling YOU.

Anyways i changed plugs/wires until i found that "sticky thread" on the website, no problems since.

The problem I have is an intermittent miss....It is not solved by coil dwell settings...I have played extensivly with coil dwell and it made no difference with my problem. It did smooth out the driveability though.

I had an AEM EMS on my turbo 4cyl Mitsubishi. I made amazing power 486 wheel hp. with it but the driveability issues you run into when the weather changes sucks. Cold start issues and misfires are very common (at least in 4 bangers) I'm trying to find out a little more about them running the 8-cylinders so this thread should be interesting and informative.
I agree with the AEM's tech support is lacking also. Jason Siebels came out to TurboTrix in NJ to tune the system, but it seems like he's the one you need on a constant basis

well your issue was DEFINATELY in your tune.
it was probably someone leaving off your air intake sensor and knock sensor so you "french fry" your motor :)

My STOCK computer does what NIL8GM describes....  I have not driven the AEM enough on the street to see if the problem has gone.

I haven't kept up with the guys at AEM. last I knew they were still having problems. They even sent someone to me to try and get a problem worked out. I had no help for the poor guy. Every car that I have put one on has had problems and cost $$$$. I still have my systems and would like to see the stuff work because they have an awesome product. Something in thier system just doesn't jive...

P.S. all the cars I changed over to different systems and made 200+ more hp and had no problems with since... they were all 1200+ hp cars to begin with, 101mm turbo, z-trim vortech etc.

The problems I am describing are not due to coil dwell.

Well I hate to say it but I have the misfire issues now. At 10psi I never had the problem but since 12 and 13 psi runs it is showing up. In 1 pass at the track today I had 9 misfires and still went 10.666 @131.726 with a 1.698 60'

Any update or Ideas what to try to fix it or is it something in the AEM?

You will be happy to know that it is a problem with the Skyline 6 cylinder applications as well. I have a bad misfire at anything around 1000 RPM under load, like when taking off from a stop sign.

I had other problems that I had to purchase a new cam sensor to allow the EMS to work properly. The stock computer can use the stock sensors properly, but with the EMS, I had to get a new sensor. I think that is a bunch of crap. If the computer did not kick ass like it does, I would get my money back. I guess I can live with a low RPM stumble.
