I got some issues sorted today, turns out my TFI was bad too. It runs OK now, revs clean, but I still feel like it's waaaaay down on power. Seems like its only making ~400 crank. I ordered my crank trigger and 36-1 wheel just now.

    Makin progress finally MFERS!!!!!!

I had a laundry list of issues, so I'll recap.

    1) Ignition was breaking up - MSD 6a box cured that.

    2) Timing was retarding with rpm.
2a) Discovered TFI control in the MS hardware was not hooked up. Fixed that
2b) TFI module tested bad. Replaced with other TFI module

    3) Ran better at this point but timing was still retarding some with RPM. That gets us to yesterday. I put about 100 miles on the car and as usual, 'ran' flawless as a blanket statement. Sat in some traffic, had some interstate business, all in all ran well.

At about 3:00 yesterday, I realized I had mis-read instructions for a setting in MS. I left work and headed west to see Scott who is going to be coating a lot of my engine. I added 50usec of latency to the ignition and noticed an improvement in top end, albeit small. After leaving Scott's house, I bumped it to 75usec and it ran well enough to whoop a 300 hp bmw off the line to about 70mph when I lifted. I got home and put a timing light on it and bumped it to 90 and then 120usec. Could it use more? Probably, but it was late and I'm 99% sure my neighbor is over me and my noise lately.

What is latency? It is the delay between when the computer tells the coil to fire and when the spark actually happens. At low rpm, it isn't much of an issue, but as the speed of the engine exceeds the travel time of the spark, it causes the retarding effect. All I was doing was adding a positive offset to the spark.

I'm about to tear the engine down for powder coating. It's going to look killer and I'm tickled shitless that the car is going to run well and look great too!

I just did a rolling 3rd gear burnout. It was everything I imagined the end of the world would be like.

I wish I could do rolling 3rd gear burnouts. I can only do them in 2nd.

If you don't have it apart, I'm headed to the track next Friday with some guys from work. Would be awesome if you could come. I took off the whole week from work to get mine running and ready for the track "fingers crossed". Not going to worry about boost control, just get it running and run off w/g spring.

Im thinking of going the dis ignition route also so make sure you take lots of pictures And save your parts list so I know what to order lol.

I'm going to try. Momma gave me the ok but I need front tires and an alignment in the worst kind of way, plus I need to figure out why my timing is still riding the short bus.

Ok cool, I still have a lot of work to do on mine and a lot of things to go wrong that will keep me from going but I should know something hopefully by Thursday.

Still slogging through troubleshooting. I spent the better part of the day yesterday reading about ignition stuff and am back at it today.

I feel like one of those TV detectives who lets his career consume him and his personal life goes to shit. Bets on when my wife gets fed up and makes me take it to a shop to let them fix it?

I just re-did all of my jumpers so that I KNOW they are correct. Also updated the firmware in the MS. Gonna go plug this thing in and then re-calibrate the WB. Had a buddy come over yesterday and said it smelled rich; pulled #1 plug and it was black. Oops.

I smashed my head into the dashboard for two months, changed cap & rotor, omhd plug wires, swapped in a phasable rotor, swapped coil, cussed, scratched my head & cussed some more. I did a lot of datalogging, and I could see the misfires threw the rpm signal. Come to find out, I had non resistor plugs in it & they were driving the MS3 crazy. I swapped in expensive ngk iridium resistor plugs & problem solved doesn't skip a beat now. What plugs are you running?

I don't believe I'm having misfires though. How did you car run? Mine "runs" in a technical sense. It's not rough, no misfires, revs clean (free and under load)... It's just not making any power. The dyno graph shows it peaking at ~375 ft lbs of torque by 3500 rpm and it levels off from there. HP is a steady incline to 6k. I feel like I'm missing something stupid.

I am truly stumped. Part of me wants to dump the car off at a shop and let them try and figure it out, but the other part says, "No, this is your project and you need to finish it." Plus I have a serious mistrust of shops and I feel like if I don't have a close relationship with them, they're not going to want to mess with it and just take my money. (coughhoustonperformancecough)

I've disassembled and reassembled the computer, swapped TFI modules, tested everything I can think of. I just don't know what else to do though. I think my best bet is to take a break from it for a little while and re-group.In the meantime, I'm going to disassemble everything and take it to Scott for powder coating.

I'm hoping as I pull everything apart that I'll find some reason as to why it's not running right and have an AHA! moment. The next month is going to be hectic and I doubt I'm home enough to work on the car anyway.

I did have a moment to work on the hood yesterday. I shot it with 2 coats of primer. Not sure when I'll have time to mess with it again.

it's still retarding with increasing RPM? or just down on power?
